I admire anyone who can respond to people in a situation like this without becoming frothingly angry at them. I'd have lost it when they both started up with those smug smiles.

Happily, this forum taught me a few new words this week. One of them being "backpfeifengesicht".

I remember a piece years ago by Van Susteren about her going to meet the president (Bush II). It was like reading an essay by your average 14 year old. Browsing her, um, blog, I see her writing style hasn't changed.

You guys have stronger stomachs than me, apparently. . .I couldn't even make it through watching the first minute of the original broadcast before I had to stop it.

'cause I need this computer for work, and I was afraid if I listened to any more, I'd punch the monitor. . .

It's much more palatable if you imagine them as actual foxes. Possibly in waistcoats.

Is that too doomsy on my part?

Women usually gain their rights in republics or city states which are governed by effective law - ancient Egypt often being among them.

Effective law is a way for the superior men to control the more animal ones. I know, that's not a very nice way of putting it. But it's in the interest of men who identify with an orderly, fatherly role to have a lawful society.

Lawful societies are often also wealthy societies.

Inferior men who feel their animal natures are not being honored (undeservedly) will engage in struggles both against women and also against the law. Social disorder and massive corruption are examples. If we go too far down that path, we could lose all the gains of feminism not so much to ideologies (that younger people often don't identify with anyway) but to pure social chaos and violence.

The introduction and spread of Christianity in late antiquity was often accompanied by mass violence - Hypatia's death is a famous example. Not only were prominent women silenced, but knowledge itself was a target for destruction. Inferior men sense knowledge they don't comprehend for themselves is a fetter against them, and they hate it as much as they hate law.

Inferior men prefer brutal and violent pecking orders are will go out of their way to establish them, even at the cost of breaking up society into chaos. This isn't the good clean fun of an honorable man enjoying some sparring in the training room. It's not even the intense commitment of a soldier of a republic. It's the replacement of law with hierarchies of abuse and exploitation.

Machiavelli believed that men in republics who were used to their rights could self govern and could not really be conquered or ruled by a prince; but plebians who knew nothing but subservience might revolt against a prince, but would be ineffective because they could not even imagine one of their own in a position of responsible power.

The entire right wing propaganda and education machine is an effort to replace small-r republican men (the armed yeomanry of antiquity) with plebes.

Watching right wing gun nuts imagine they are that armed yeomanry is particularly astonishing.

That homophobic bigot Bryan Fischer weighs in:

So here we have a bunch of scared old white males who spend their remaining time on this planet trying to drag society back into a glorified era of American history that never really existed. It's not that they merely do not contribute anything positive to society, they actively work to bring it down, simply because they don't want to share it with women, homosexuals and other minorities. And these fools wonder publicly why there is not enough progress? Well, I think I've identified the problem.

Naturally they just had to also toss in abortion, saying this issue hurts "the children that have survived." Conservatives can find a way to toss abortion into any topic at all. There is a local asshat here who frequently writes letters to the editor, and it doesn't matter what the recent news is, he will find a way to tie it to abortion and write a letter about it. After that massive tsunami years ago, he wrote in that more babies died in abortion than in the tsunami and talked about abortion for five paragraphs.

Another hurtful aspect of this topic of women's equality and workplace issues that sometimes gets missed, my wife and I have talked about this a lot. When jerks like these Fox pundits pull stunts like this, it attacks every option people have. My wife actually WANTS to work less and be at home more, caring for the house and kids and helping me with my health problems. We don't see it as anything subserviant for either of us to choose to do so, if we could. When the pundits, in their attempts to glorify stay at home moms and attack equal rights and wind up summarizing their arguments this way, it winds up belittling those who do stay at home or want to stay home but can't. It labels them as subservient, submissive, etc and provokes the ire of others against women (or men) who consciously choose that option. We should have the absolute ability, as a woman or a man, to elect the option of having a stay at home parent without judgment, it's a personal decision, and these days requires a lot of sacrifice to live on one income. By making it such a divisive issue, they hurt those who do choose to stay home too.

The English suffragette, Rebecca West , said that the real force that made the suffragette movement was the opposition, finally women could publicly hear what some men really thought of them. That is as true today as it was then.

Moment of confusion - was the study specifically aimed at women who are married and HAVE kids and are the primary breadwinner?

Or simply women who are the head of the household and therefore the "primary breadwinner" but may or may not have anyone else living there?

Because that could mean they counted single women living alone. . .or single women with kids who have no choice but to support their family. . .or childfree couples where the woman just happens to make more money than her spouse.

Or (gasp) people like me, who are "living in sin" with their significant other, but choosing not to marry. Or to have children.

But women. . .earning paychecks? Being able to support themselves?

Some even making more money than the manly-men?

Yep, definitely the sign of the Downfall of Society.

Fox Business Refuses To Air Ultraviolet Ad Slamming Pundits For Sexist Comments

While I agree with their message, did Ultraviolet honestly think fox news would air this ad?

What is particularly absurd about this is that younger men want their women to bring in the big $$$.

So tell them all about it. Tell them to go and make twice as much money as they are now to support their stay at home wives. Then get back to us, lol.

What doesn't ring true is Fox's claim they couldn't air it because of copyright infringement. If Fox doesn't own the rights to thier own shows then who does? Bleh. It's all probably buried in some corporate shenanigans between Fox Broadcasting, Fox Studios, 21st Century Fox and who knows what else.

btw, the reason for this is because this is one area where the women's movement benefits them in the form of cold, hard cash. If your wife has a good paying job that means: a bigger house, nicer vacations, money for the kids, money for that big screen tv and not having the weight of total responsibility for putting food on the table all on your shoulders, alone. They are also used to women working and if they were brought up by their mothers, already being the head of the household.

These guys are a dying breed except for the young bible thumpers, promise keeper types. And few young men really want that shit. They would have to delete their porn stash.

There's a lot of truth to that.

Not saying it applies to all. . .but around here there are a lot (and I mean a LOT) of really useless young men with absolutely no work ethic, no ambition, very little education, and no experience or interest in learning skilled trades. They talk as though the world owes them a favor, and they deserve these high-paying jobs with great hours and benefits, but those that get hired are just LAZY. I see it in my job. My SO has worked in a factory position for almost 30 years and he sees these guys come and go all the time. They have great pay, union job, great benefits. . .but some guys just don't want to do the work because it interferes with their social lives.

Also, lots of "momma's boys" who don't know how to take care of themselves at all. . .they can't even support themselves, let alone a family. Which is sad. . .because many of them already have kids that they cannot provide anything for.

But, never mind that. . .because the real threat to so-called American Values is that a lot of women are supporting themselves, even if it means working several jobs or long long hours just to make ends meet.
