Fighting To Remove Native American Sports Mascots

Native American mascots: Pride or prejudice? – In America - CNN.com Blogs

I hope they succeed. Team names like the Washington Redskins are horribly offensive. I don't care how long the name has been used.

I'd love to see the Redskins change their name to the Washington Dukes, after one of the city's most famous musicians. That, and Rocks in my Bed would be a pretty appropriate team anthem.

When I was but a child, and raised by a racist, I could not understand why this was an issue.

To my view, those names represented STRONG warriors. Much like my own team, the Vikings.

Then....I began to consider...how would I like a team named the Little Big Horn Custers or Redheads?

The penny dropped, and understanding came.

If the teams want NDN names, work out licensing deals with local tribes.

That way the tribes have control over how the name is used, and get money for it.

And since tribal names and such should be considered registered trademarks, let them go to civil court to collect past damages for theft of trademark by the sports teams.

It's a sad fact this has been one of the few ways tribes have effectively fought use of their name on non-tribal products.

Anyway, this may work against teams like the Chicago Blackhawks or Florida State Seminoles, but how does it help for the Redskins, Braves, Chiefs and Indians?

It will never happen. Even if that annoying jackass Dan Snyder changed the team's name, it wouldn't be the Dukes. I'm sure he would name it after himself and not after "some black guy" he's probably vaguely aware of. His ego doesn't let him be thoughtful.

The problem is local tribes may not be the best ones to ask. Since most native populations on the east coast were cleared out or assimilated a tribe living comfortably on the east coast may have a different reaction than a more traditional one living out west (who would be more harmed by a derogatory name).

A point about which tribe to ask would be valid if the names were specific to one tribe or another. More often they use generic slurs though.

In the case of the DC team it is obviously not a matter of honouring anyone. If that were so they would have called it something like the "Washington Blackies" and now be explaining why it was not offensive to the ethnic group that is in the majority here.

I don't understand how anyone could not see how racist the Redskins name is for a football team? Would you walk up to a Native American and say "hey there how they hanging you r... you?" That would be just as offensive as walking up and inserting the n word in the r word's place. Its terrible.

What ever happened to the idea of naming tribes after something neutral, like an animal? My schools growing up used the Pumas and the Huskies.

Thinking about it though my town probably verged on non-PC. It was Troy so guess what name was slapped on things everywhere? Then again, the original city of Troy is long gone so we had just as much a claim to Trojans as every other Troy out there.

I have a solution for the Washington Redskins, AND a way for them to keep their name.

Change the logo and mascot to a redskin potato

The Redskins were founded in 1932. It was a different world where white men determined social etiquette.

Here in Michigan, the state's Civil Rights Commission has asked the US Department of Education to "issue an order prohibiting the continued use American Indian mascots, names, nicknames, slogans, chants and/or imagery." In retaliation, Republicans are threatening to cut nearly all funding to the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. Because who needs civil rights anymore, anyway?

The answer to civil rights is more guns.

Right?

I am not sure if it was a thread here but South Dakota has been renaming a few geographical features to be more sensitive lately. The examples in the article were variations of 'squaw humper' (the first word is pretty much 'prostitute').

That's so thoroughly blatant. This is the party that fantasizes about getting voter support outside of their "base" ???????????????

I'm surprised they haven't names something "the Prairie N***ers". That is a common slur, at least around here. Does that tell you how much NDNs are liked here?

Why?

The Kiwi international Rugby team is called the All Blacks because they wear an all black rugby strip.

black shirt
black socks
black shorts.

It has nothing to do with race.

As a team name it has more in common with redsox than redskins.

Sorry Lloyd, but you just failtrolled.

Worthless? How so, specifically? Do you know that logo? Do you know the ORIGIN of the name? Seen a picture of a native New Zealander recently?

For that matter, does it even make a difference?

Yes, the original team were originally simply known as "The New Zealanders" and were initially formed for a tour of the UK.

A British newspaper commenting on their playing style said that the team were "All backs" but there was a typo, and it became "All blacks". Seeing as they had an all black strip, they liked this so much, they adopted the name.

Yeah, I call bullshit.

If it's nothing to do with the natives, why the hell do they do a haka before every match?

Because they copied a Maori team that was touring Australia and the UK.
Wikipedia:
The New Zealand native team that toured Britain in 1888/89 used Ake Ake Kia Kaha, and the 1903 team in Australia used a mocking haka, Tupoto koe, Kangaru!. The 1905 All Blacks began the tradition of using Ka Mate — a haka composed in the 19th century by Ngāti Toa leader Te Rauparaha. The 1924 All Blacks used a specially composed haka Ko Niu Tireni, but later All Blacks reverted to Ka Mate
