Yeeeaaah. It really shows you how far right this country has careened. What is scary is that if we continue on this trajectory, what is going to happen in 2016?

It's also a good reason why all the Romney-hate is ridiculous.

No, it really isn't. Just because they're both in a similar area on that map doesn't mean there aren't differences which are very important to quite a lot of people.

By all means, please elaborate. If Romney were running on his real record as a moderate in Mass., that would be one thing. The fictional version of him changes from day to day.

That's too complicated, just say there will be no straight answers because we're most of us are Obama lovers & Romney haters (paraphrasing)!

I've seen actual conservatives here who can hold their own and have a decent debate even though I generally disagree with them as well as occasionally wanting reach through my monitor with my bare hands.

I do miss the intellectual conservative. I am not sure what happened to them.

ETA: I don't just mean, what happened to them, I'm sure they're where they've always been. But the idea of being an intellectual conservative, it is gone. I do miss that.

Mitt Romney only has one consistent policy position.

Ready? Here it is.

Mitt Romney would like to become President.

Romney hate? Please. What possibly is there to hate about him? The only thing really available to hate are a mounting record of lies, half-truths, obfuscation, and changing positions. Its impossible to hate something when there is no real person there to hate, no consistent position by which to base your hatred on. Its his pure hypocrisy that is hated, the shifting bland statements that move as quickly as tidal system. We can hate what he represents moment to moment but the man himself is like feeling disgust for a caricature. Romney's position as Lianne noted is purely based on that he wants to be President with no substance and no policy to speak of.

He's a bottle of miracle elixir or snake oil. Heck, even mental midgets like Ron Paul and Rick Santorum had the guts to make a bold positional statement and stick to it, they might be screwed up or just outright bigoted but they had and have more principles than Romney.

Well, I don't know. William F. Buckley was an impressive intellectual, which made his defense of, for example Joe McCarthy, all that much more scary.

It's almost better now, nicely sorted out with goonish positions being supported by actual goons like Rush Limbaugh.

When I ask those people why, or point out to them (via FACTS) that they are harboring some serious misconceptions, they refuse to acknowledge it.

Yep, uninformed voters. Gotta love 'em.
Exactly - they not only refuse to acknowledge it, they get angry because you're seriously denting their frames of reference.

I'm not happy with Obama, but Romney as president is about the worst nightmare this country could have.

I will quote myself:

"Ted Bundy was extremely charismatic. If he had run for President I have no doubt he would have gotten followers. Putting Romney in office is exactly like putting a serial killer in office, only the victims will be the institutions of this country as well as 99% of its inhabitants."

I'm voting for Romney because he has pledged to grind up old people and feed them to the poor.

Romney/Ryan 2012: Because, that's why.

In the end, it's really a moot point. Half the people here are from outside the US, and our political system horrifies most Europeans for how far to the right we are.

Obama has a 90% chance of winning this time around, 10% chance of a landslide according to nate silver. In the end, it doesn't matter though. Congress will remain in control of the Republicans, who will simply stall everything until 2016, when they can blame the economy on Obama again, sweeping into the White House, just in time for a war with Iran.

My generation's fucked anyway. So vote for whoever helps you sleep at night, I don't really care.

You've answered your own question. You won't find many conservatives here because they don't feel welcome here. They won't just not answer your question; they aren't here to see it. SLU is pretty far along the self-selection process.

A place only has to lean a little left and people solidly on the right, for whom politics is important, will find someplace else to hang out. Not that they are chased away, or even sense they'd rather be elsewhere, but a place that leans left just isn't going to feel like home. So, the conservatives for whom politics is important aren't even here.

Since they aren't here, the place doesn't just lean left; it's solidly left. Particularly in the politics forum, anyone leaning right isn't going to get support. It might be possible to avoid the politics forum, but venture there just once and a conservative is likely to be offended. SLU can be a place to participate in SL-related conversation, and there might even be lots of conservatives in the SL forum, but by post count they'll be a small minority, because the liberals consider SLU home and post a lot more.

So, even the casual conservatives don't post much, and the place isn't just solidly left; it's overwhelmingly left. A moderate conservative is going to be occasionally offended outside the politics forum, and venturing into the politics area a conservative will see what SLU really thinks of them. Even a moderate conservative has to really like virtual worlds, and really really really need company, to hang out with people who think they're stupid.

Sounds a lot like Tennessee for the Republican side. A grid wide poll of SL would be interesting, not that it would predict a winner. My guess is that would still likely include a majority of liberals, and a significant influence of furriners.

[The poll is now 49 for no, 1 for undecided, as America begins to wake up. (Not figuratively. Getting out of bed.)]

Not really because then you would be counting all independents as politically closer to republicans than democrats. I do not count the tea party as independents as they are now pretty much republicans but more right-wing than most. More of us are on the left than the right so if you could rank votes most would say "#1 is for (party-of-choice) and #2 is Obama".
