My Mood: | OK, Mr. al-Zawahiri, let's list them! First up, "Dogma"! So, speaking of butthurt, today Muslims in Egypt and Libya are rioting because of some unnamed internet footage somewhere produced by somebody that insults Mohammed. My first reaction was: mymymy. Somebody with good media skills wants to stir up trouble on Sept. 11th. But perhaps I'm cynical. Perhaps Mohamed al-Zawahiri (brother of al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri) is being sincere when he asked today: "how would the Americans feel if films insulting leading Christian figures like the pope or historical figures like Abraham Lincoln were produced?" Now, in Islamic terms, "insult" includes making fun of the saint/God, portraying the saint/God having sex, etc.. So, is anyone up for listing such films and how we feel about them? I'll start: "Dogma" (Kevin Smith). I feel just fine about this film - hilarious. |

| Monty Python's Life of Brian. Absolutely brilliant. I'm probably not the kind of person he has in mind. The only movie that made me want to start a riot was The Blair Witch project, because it was so damn bad. So what if a movie or book insults your idol? Man up and grow a pair. The level of hypersensitivity Muslims have over Muhammad verges on idolatry. Last edited by Eris; 09-11-2012 at 08:52 PM. |

My Mood: | Here's a serious one, caused much debate in the U.S. and some violence in Paris (unrest was condemned by the Catholic Archbishop of Paris). Still banned in some places, the film's depiction of Christ in a happy marriage scandalized the sensibility of many Christians. But the bulk of the citizenry never questioned Scorcese's right to make the film. And, more lightheartedly, Honest Abe sells insurance! |

I understand that there is very little government authority in Libya, but Egypt has security forces, and CNN is reporting that Egyptian security forces did not intervene when Egyptians tried to enter the embassy. There are marines in the embassy in Egypt. Regardless of the legal, moral, or political issues involved, if the Egyotian government doesn't do something to ensure the safety of the embassy, those marines will be forced to act. Unfortunately, I also suspect that this is the ultimate goal of the protests.

The 'movie' in question is actually the work of other religious extremists who are just trying to piss off Muslims with the "My God is better than your God" thing. It is being promoted and defended by that crazy pastor who burnt a Quran a couple of months ago, which was pretty much in the same league. The movie looks so cheap, stupid, badly written and directed, that anyone would find it stupidly offensive. Seriously, brown face makeup ? Last edited by Nibb Tardis; 09-12-2012 at 01:49 AM.

Fortunately, most Muslims don't react like rabid dogs to these sorts of things, or there would be a lot more to worry about than just a few riots. But many Muslims would also agree that this sort of reaction is akin to idolatry, and I wholeheartedly agree with that observation.

Hail Woz, the great and
powerful!
| How about the Borgias? Or does that not count because it is television? I am sure we could come up with plenty of books, comics, songs, and other media. Some of my current faves are 'creationist cousins' and 'what if god was one of us'. Also 'hallelujah' by some interpretations of the lyrics. I am sure there are more in my collection that I can not think of offhand.

Business: Black Operations Client: Singularity | (although I was looking for the clip where he calls the Worldwide Jewish Conspiracy and tells the Moshe Dayan character that they urgently need to send out copies of every movie that portrays Jews in a good light for propaganda purposes, and the leader responds "so you want Fiddler on the Roof and Yenta"). |

| Senior Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | It doesn't get any better than Andy Kaufman as a televangelist and Richard Pryor as God. It is easier for Christians in the United States to accept a little satire of religion, because we have a top military defending our freedom of religion, no wars happening on our soil, unemployment at a low 8%, and even a lot of the people we consider poor still have food to eat and places to sleep. |

Really must get moving
| Hells, there's this guy who goes to Sakuracon dressed as Jesus Christ. For fun! I'd say we're pretty chill with our own religion in general.
