Audio Surfaces of Paul Ryan's Effusive Love of Ayn Rand - Politics - The Atlantic Wire
"I just want to speak to you a little bit about Ayn Rand and what she meant to me in my life and [in] the fight we’re engaged here in Congress. I grew up on Ayn Rand, that’s what I tell people."
"I grew up reading Ayn Rand and it taught me quite a bit about who I am and what my value systems are, and what my beliefs are."
"It’s inspired me so much that it’s required reading in my office for all my interns and my staff. We start with Atlas Shrugged. People tell me I need to start with The Fountainhead then go to Atlas Shrugged [laughter]. There’s a big debate about that. We go to Fountainhead, but then we move on, and we require Mises and Hayek as well."
"But the reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand."
"And when you look at the twentieth-century experiment with collectivism—that Ayn Rand, more than anybody else, did such a good job of articulating the pitfalls of statism and collectivism—you can’t find another thinker or writer who did a better job of describing and laying out the moral case for capitalism than Ayn Rand."
"It’s so important that we go back to our roots to look at Ayn Rand’s vision, her writings, to see what our girding, under-grounding [sic] principles are."
"Because there is no better place to find the moral case for capitalism and individualism than through Ayn Rand’s writings and works."
And some video: Paul Ryan on Ayn Rand - YouTube
^ Ryan: "I think a lot of people would observe that we are right now living in an Ayn Rand novel, metaphorically speaking.
...
Ayn Rand, more than anyone else, did a fantastic job of explaining the morality of capitalism, the morality of individualism."
And then, apparently, Ryan discovered she was an atheist: Ryan Shrugged - Robert Costa - National Review Online
“I reject her philosophy,” Ryan says firmly. “It’s an atheist philosophy. It reduces human interactions down to mere contracts and it is antithetical to my worldview. If somebody is going to try to paste a person’s view on epistemology to me, then give me Thomas Aquinas,” who believed that man needs divine help in the pursuit of knowledge. “Don’t give me Ayn Rand,” he says.
To quote an episode from Michele Bachmann's life:
Bachmann grew up in a Democratic family, but she says she became a Republican during her senior year at Winona State. She told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that she was reading Gore Vidal's 1973 novel, Burr: "He was kind of mocking the Founding Fathers and I just thought, I just remember reading the book, putting it in my lap, looking out the window and thinking, 'You know what? I don't think I am a Democrat. I must be a Republican.'"
Michele Bachmann - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Republicans seem to be easily swayed by works of fiction.

Seriously, I have no fucking idea how you can read a single book by Ayn Rand and not know she was an atheist.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall of AARP today...

Seriously, this almost seems like they are just engineering a loss. If there's one really good thing this will do its energize the senior citizen vote to come out and vote for President Obama.

They are seriously using the idea of environmental protection as a "bad" thing in speeches introducing this guy. Its like a caricature of the Republican Party.

BBC News - Republican Romney names Paul Ryan as running mate

Quote:
The BBC's North America Editor Mark Mardell says the decision is a bold and ideological choice.
I don't think that's necessarily a recommendation.

Unless, maybe, the idea is that it allows Romney to go after the the undecided voters whose support he must gain, while Mr Ryan can reassure the party faithful that Romney might have to say various things to appeal to voters who aren't already committed Republicans but his presence on the ticket ensures that a President Romney wouldn't stray too far from conservatism while in office. Meanwhile, I suppose, Romney can reassure doubters that the incumbent of a post once held by people like Spiro T Agnew and J Danforth Quayle can't do too much real damage.

Romney is actually praising VA's governor? I think I will throw up.

He just made it official about Ryan.

Oh fun, Romney just reminded us. Ryan is a Catholic.

While most people could care less to their religious base that is almost as controversial as his being a Mormon!

Romney can kiss Florida goodbye. You don't threaten Social Security and survive in Florida.

In introducing Ryan, Romney called him the "next president of the United States."

So much for using that soundbite for election materials.

Ryan is the right guy to occupy the White House after President Palin.

This actually confirms my suspicion that the Republicans want to lose, and then do all the dirty work through Congress. The stupid part of the voting public doesn't seem to understand much about what Congress does. Those voters seem to think we live in a dictatorship controlled by the President - a viewpoint the right wing talking heads encourage. It's a perfect set up for getting away with more lying to the base and more obstructionism.

Not only Social Security, but Medicare, which Ryan wants to turn into a big coupon program.

Short of nominating Marcus Bachmann, this has to be the best news I've heard in awhile. People already think Romney is an out of touch asshole douchebag. So what does he do? He adds someone just as smarmy who has laid out very clear policy plans to cut support for the poor and middle class, while helping the rich and the military industrial complex. Even the Catholic Church, that bastion of corruption and greed has come out against Ryan's plan as being completely fucked up (I am paraphrasing). Good times.

Christianity and Ayn Rand are pretty incompatible with one another.

Not the type of Christianity the religious right practices. They're from the branch of "God helps those who help themselves."

Objectivism is religion hostile. Ayn Rand was an outspoken atheist at a time where such a thing was hardly discussed, let alone bragged about. I'm not entirely sure why you're associating the two groups together.

The religious right cares more about "morals" and controlling women than they do Objectivist-esque "fend for yourselves." That's why Ryan had to disavow spooging for her later on.
