Food For Thought: Mitt Romney

Those taxing questions come back to haunt Mitt Romney - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

Mittens gave McCain's people 23 years of tax returns. After that McCain picked Sarah Palin.

Does that tell you anything?

Sounds preferable to voting for Mittens.

I'm voting for Obama. I live in Texas so while that's throwing my vote away it's still preferable to voting for Ron Paul.

You are voting in a Presidential Election. By definition, that is "throwing your vote away".

I am voting green.

Before anyone goes on about 'throwing my vote away' Obama is pretty much a lock in DC. The republicans sometimes come in *3rd* here and most in this city will reelect an african-american president no matter what his policies are.

Worst (and extremely unlikely) case: DC only has 1 electoral college vote anyway.

This thread frightens me. Disenchanted Republicans are still going to vote Romney. They don't care if he's a tax cheat - they don't believe rich people should pay taxes. A vote for a third party is another vote for Romney in all but name.

Frankly, the real problem isn't even so much the corruption in the state, but the complete polarization of parties. Republicans absolutely will not support Dems and Visa Versa, and anyone who might come up and make a difference with a third party choice is totally disenchanted to give a shit.

So Romney is a tax cheat, Republicans HAVE to vote for him because that's their party.

Basically, the system is broken.

To be fair, he also gave McCain a glimpse of his personality. That's a deal killer in anyone's book!

I live in Kansas and I'm voting for Obama. Kansas has 6 electoral votes and they are assigned in a block, rather than parceled out according to popular vote.

So put Kansas' 6 votes down in Romney's column (the last time we went Democrat was for LBJ vs Goldwater, 1964), but put an asterisk by that because some of us do NOT approve

The thing that frightens me more is that according to polls, the young and minorities aren't quite as enthusiastic about Obama as they were in '08. That's what won the election for him 4 years ago. This time it could get dicey.

I guess it's time to reprint my rules for voting:
  1. Never EVER vote party lines... always the person, not the party.
  2. Consider voting your conscience first!
  3. If you believe your conscious vote is not popular enough to win, vote for the least damaging option you have that might win.
that's it... no advice on what is or is not in your best interest, just the best strategy to both get what you are hoping for, and prevent the worst of what you are hoping against.

What I've not yet figured out is how George Romney, Mitt's father, ran for the Republican nomination for President in 1968.Since George was born in Mexico. He wasn't born on a military air station (Panama Canal Zone which was a territory of the US at the time) like McCain.

While it was a Mormon colony, Colonia Dublan, it was not a US territory, military base or in any way US soil.

There were questions at the time, but George dropped out before the argument could occur. The thing going for George was that both of his parents were US citizens. And some legal scholars are of the opinion that having at least one parent with US citizenship would make a person a natural born citizen regardless of birthplace.

Gaskell Romney, foreign national living in Mexico (ie, US citizen living as a foreign national in Mexico).

You call residing in Texas "living"? Oh, wait ... I'm in Chicago and that's not really living either

I wish there was a two-round voting system in Canada. We may have more than two 'serious' parties at the moment, but I suspect we will be facing a similar dilemma for the next federal vote.

Wait - I thought I couldn't run for president because I was born in W Germany - but I was born on a base [I think] and my dad was military.... I don't think the parents were citizens made you a native born, unless it was because parents were working for the government, and I know there was a question there, but....

And maybe the delegates will turn around and nominate Gary Johnson just to get some with a chance in hell of winning - even if he's currently the libertarian candidate.

Or better yet, let's pick a smart woman and just all write her in - I really don't think she'd do any -worse-.
