When Christians are their own worst enemies

For the record, I like LZ Granderson. There haven't been many columns of his that I didn't agree with.

And I agree on this one, as well, with the caveat that *most* Christians don't engage in the kind of whacko gay-bashing/Christian-persecution-whining we've known from Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell or Rep. Louie Gohmert.

Still, what we have here is a minority getting inordinate amount of press and drawing the wrong kind of attention to their faith. Don't they realize the damage they're doing to the image of Christianity in this country?

When Christians are their own worst enemies - CNN.com

Quote:
And just this weekend, as the nation is trying to heal from the theater shootings in Aurora, Colorado, Jerry Newcombe, a spokesman for the evangelical group Truth in Action, took time out of his day to inform mourners that some of their loved ones were going to hell.

His comments were made after U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, said he believed the shootings happened because Christianity is under attack.
Quote:
But I have a problem when a disaster claims innocent victims or causes a great deal of pain and loss, and instead of showing compassion, these so-called leaders of faith say the gays did it. Or the liberals. Or that gem Falwell served up -- the ACLU. That kind of rhetoric not only violates Christ's greatest commandment -- to love -- but is completely illogical.

As a Christian, I understand the importance of faith. But Jesus did not say you have to be illogical or inhumane to be a person of faith. Newcombe and others like him would remember that, I doubt he would have chosen the day after the Aurora shooting to tell mourners their loved ones are burning in hell.
Newcombe's comments are here: Jerry Newcombe: 'Non-Christian victims of Aurora going to hell'

Quote:
An evangelical leader Jerry Newcombe, of the group Truth in Action, says the Colorado shooting happened because Americans have lost fear of hell. Commenting on the victims, he said: "If a person doesn’t know Jesus... they are going to a terrible place."
Thinking. It's hard work.

Robertson and Hagee and Newcombe don't care about Christians. They only care about the Christians who donate to them and support their power base.

One of the reasons that Robertson and Hagee and Newcombe have the loudest voices is because they take those church donations and fund a marketing empire, rather than wasting the money on something like helping the needy.

I think Robertson, this twit Newcombe, et all are the kind of people who Jesus had in mind when he said to watch out for wolves in sheeps clothing. (Matthew 7:15)

What's mst disturbing isn't that there are Christian leaders like this but that they have millions of followers.

Remember in the story of the sheep and goats. All are Christians but a full 50% go to hell. So, no, it' doesn't surprise me that the wolves have loads of followers at all.

yes, they do. and they don't care because in their eyes, all the others are just faking it.

they aren't the ones that are actually doing the most damage to the image though.... it's the ones that don't stand up to, and deny them, that do.

If I'm standing next to someone and say we think X, and that person doesn't indicate that they disagree, then everyone in earshot is going to think they agree with me.
