I believe the appropriate reaction is.....

'ouch'

Well, I'm certain that this in will no way affect the GOP base but its certain to make the swing state swing voters sit up and notice.

Before the game starts the match can appear to be fairly even. And then at some point as the game progresses it becomes increasingly clear that there must have been a serious miscalculation in the skill and talent levels of this pairing.
In one of the most physically and psychologically challenging contests in modern history...to win the presidency. And there is still over four months to go. If you ever have played tennis against someone with an unreturnable serve, Romney has got months of this to look forward to. In other words...
Mitt's in some deep sh**!

I, for one, sincerely hope so. But I'm not sanguine that pesky things like facts or social justice will keep millions of people from drinking the Koch brothers koolaid and believing that Obama is (a) a socialist (b) wants big government and welfare handouts (c) is a Kenyan Muslim.

You'd think those old canards would have been put to bed since 2008, but they're still very much alive.

I think the Obama camp should embrace the word socialist, and whatever else the GOP loves to accuse them with, since the more they waste time and energy on denying and explaining, the more it seems (to the ignoramus) that Romney is scoring points. Something like,

''Socialist? If you mean we care more about those who've lost their employment, who need medical help (like vets), who need job training and security, then we do about those who keep their money in offshore banks, then Yes!''

They should make it about Social Good VS Greed and Thievery

People in this country are taught in the cradle to fear socialism.

But that's what I mean. Whenever anyone wants to take away a politician's credibility, all they have to do is point and scream !Socialist! Take the fear away, and it can't be used as effectively as it seems to be used in the U.S. at the moment.

Or maybe I'm just being hopeful.

I think you're being hopeful. People here don't have a flying fuck of a clue what socialism means, they just know it has something to do with death squads for old people.

President Obama during a campaign stop today;
"Bipartisan economists conducted a study and concluded that Governor Romney's economic plan would create 8,000 jobs. The problem is that these jobs won't be created in America"

I'd like to believe this, but the news is full of the fact that contributions to Romney are coming in at a rate FIVE TIMES greater than are contributions to Obama. And Romney hasn't yet fully tapped the deep pockets of the many GOP-leaning affluent. Today's Chicago Tribune has a good run-down; a short excerpt:

Quote:
Obama's total haul of $552.5 million so far still has him ahead of Romney's $394.9 million but the Republican challenger has drilled deep into the ranks of Wall Street and the wealthy, where many are disgruntled by what they see as Obama's anti-business rhetoric and policies.
That reach has aided Romney's fast-paced catch-up to Obama's fundraising. Usually, the advantage in this area is held by an incumbent over the presidential challenger.
The president's campaign has been sounding alarms that he could be the first incumbent to be outspent.
And the Victory Fund is one of the venues Romney has to make that happen. While campaigns can take only up to $5,000 from one donor, split between the primary process and the general election, a fund used jointly with the national party can accept up to $70,800 in addition to that.
Romney's fundraising potential far from tapped: federal disclosures - Chicago Tribune

Interesting sidenote: if you put "Obama," "Romney," and "fundraising" into Google, what you get at the top of the page is that very Victory Fund site, with the line "Romney will cut federal spending and regulation. Donate $5 now!"

The next days headline reads:
"Obama Hates Liberty and Freedom, Declares Communist Manifesto for the United States!"

... and people would lap it up, bank on it.

While, in my opinion, it doesn't describe socialism completely accurately , I thought this article has a lot of truth in it.

Quote:
Socialism does not mean the abolition of a free market society, nor does Socialism call for a government takeover of all industry; that is Communism. Socialists acknowledge the limitation of a free market and believes that some industries should not be run for profit. Police protection, fire protection, prisons, education, health care, parks, electricity, water supplies, waste and sewage removal, and roadways are just a few examples of industries which should not be run for profit. The reasoning behind this belief is when these industries are operating for profit, not only will prices rise, but corresponding services would then be reserved only for those who can afford them.

It is effective, in my opinion, in accurately reflecting my opinion of Romney but I am one of the choir. It might be effective in swaying swing voters too, that is for now, today. People have incredibly short memories, and as someone else said, there are still 4 months to go. That is an eternity in political campaigns.

Yes. And with their huge and growing war chest, the GOP will be running ads nonstop. My guess is that there is some little snippet of tape somewhere in which Obama was recorded as saying something fairly innocuous in context, such as 'there are probably too many guns out there' or the like.

He's been careful. But he's bound to have said some little thing that could be taken out of context.

And there will be ads on every channel showing a darkened picture of his face (scary black man!), playing the snippet of him saying the out-of-context bit, and with the voice-over "HE'S COMING FOR YOUR GUNS. STOP HIM. VOTE ROMNEY." On radio stations, nonstop, the snippet and the "HE'S COMING FOR YOUR GUNS. STOP HIM. VOTE ROMNEY." Ad buys on all the big Internet sites with "HE'S COMING FOR YOUR GUNS. STOP HIM. VOTE ROMNEY."

Count on it.
