| He grew up in a poor community in Brooklyn, which was predominantly Jewish and Black. His wife owns and operates a non profit salon, that provides free services for women attempting to get into work and off of welfare, so I'd hazard that he's still in touch with his roots |

Chris Rock was right, although I'd say that in 2012 I want to share my independence with African-Americans, Latinos, Asians, Brazilians and everyone else who came to this country since the 18th century. The backlash against his comment tells me we're not as far along as we thought.

SL Join Date: 05/20/2003 | In the minds of said people (I'm not saying "all" white folks), its not "privilege", its the "natural order". Giving "those people" equal rights or putting one in the White House are crimes against nature. |

My Mood: Client: Exodus | Yeah, disturbing isn't it? The concept that equal rights should be given by a somehow false superior people? Kind of a really sick paternalistic spirit there. As to the comment from Chris? Seriously, what a silly assed think to get upset about. |

My Mood: SL Join Date: late 04... that account is deleted now | he ain't wrong.... ... and I'll get slapped for saying this, but he ain't right either. the statement was true, and funny (I can even hear his ironic tone in my head, and I love it).... but it's funny because it isn't current. He's a comedian so I don't really expect some deep social analysis of it over a throwaway joke, but it doesn't say anything really about current problems for minorities. it's even a little divisive over something that should arguably bring everyone in the country together.... ... but meh, he's a comedian, so I don't get what the hell people are groaning about. He pointed out something that people forget or ignore and made most of them laugh in the process... I think he lives up to his billing.

Business: Faerycat Designs Client: Firestorm | I remember being told I was unpatriotic right after 9/11 [I mean right after, when the scum sucking leeches started profiting off of a tragedy], because I said that it was unpatriotic to destroy the american flag just to have on waving from your antenna. As for the joke, its half right - there were non-slave blacks before the revolution, even before southern plantations even really got a start [the original slaves were treated like any other indentured servant from europe initially]. In the south, you had slavery but the north didn't, it is even a part of the consitution. But to get butthurt over it and lash out shows a certain level of knowing deep in their hearts the sentiment is still true - that there is still racism in this country. [And there is such a thing as reverse racism, but this sure the hell isn't it. |

| So, today is the 9th of July. The day that 92 years after the declaration of independence, the 14th amendment was ratified. A day as significant for African Americans, as the 4th, if you think about it, and of course, it's not commemorated at all. Just goes to show Chris Rock is right. |

My Mood: SL Join Date: 2007 | So the european indentured servants were kidnapped from their homes against their will, separated from their families, chained together in hellish conditions at sea, sold to the highest bidder and knew that no matter what happened, they and their descendants would never be free? |

My Mood: SL Join Date: late 04... that account is deleted now | in some cases the effective answer to that question is, yes. Further, there were quite a few in the US that only missed out on the "hellish conditions at sea". but that's neither here nor there, since once owned (or leased, as it were) a person was property... ... a concept I am happy to not have lived with, even if some places still practice it effectively (mostly on women). |
