Jury finds Jerry Sandusky guilty on dozens of child sex abuse charges

Quote:
Bellefonte, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was found guilty on Friday night on 45 of 48 counts related to sexual abuse of boys over a 15-year period.

Jurors delivered the verdict around 10 p.m. after deliberating for about 21 hours.

Sandusky's case gripped the nation and led to the dismissal of a legendary coach and one of America's highest-paid university presidents, while his trial included gripping and at times graphic testimony from his victims.

During closing arguments, prosecutors described the ex-Nittany Lions defensive coordinator as a pedophile who preyed on victims using a charity he founded for troubled children, repeatedly abusing young boys in his care.

Sandusky, 68, had pleaded not guilty to the 48 charges of child sex abuse that spanned a 15-year period.

Yeah. Like we didn't see that coming. One or two counts I could see a chance that he wasn't guilty and someone was trying to frame him. But 49 counts? Burn in hell you bastard.

Best damn thing I heard all day. No little boys in prison but lots of huge -ass men who don't like child molesting monsters.

To me, Sandusky only added to his crimes by not confessing and asking for a plea bargain.

He surely didn't believe he was going to be acquitted? Did he have any compassion for his victims at all, and consider what kind of pain and shame they were going to have to relive by testifying?

Rhetorical questions. It just tells me he arrogantly thought he could actually get off because he was part of a powerful football program that was idolized by so many people in the area.

I hope they never EVER let him out.

This is the standard 'Die-in-Jail' verdict old criminals wake up screaming about.

And his wife who claimed not to be aware of anything for 40 years: They should put her in the same cell her husband will occupy until his death. I'm sure the son has some information about what she knew and didn't know.

I hope this verdict sets a new standard for our society - that no matter how powerful you are, you cannot abuse children and get away with it.

I know a man who was molested for years by someone famous and powerful. When the Sandusky situation first came to light I was shocked at the similarities between my friend's experience and Sandusky's behavior. These predators know how to spot and manipulate lonely kids, who are afraid they won't be believed because the person hurting them is held up on a pedestal by society. My friend never went to the police and his abuser died a beloved figure. Only a few people know the truth. I pray that this verdict will give other abuse survivors the courage to speak out and get justice.

I hope this helps in the cause of raising awareness of the widespread nature of the abuse of children, male and female, in this society.
How much do you want to bet that Sandusky was abused as a child? This will go on, and go on, and go on, until we wake up.

I wished I believed in a Hell after death. Then, there might be a chance this monster would truly pay for his crimes.

I do believe in Hell before death, and I'm pretty sure all of his victims resided there for far too long until Jerry decided they'd become "too old" for his predation.

Sadly, corrections officials are all too aware of the predilection of general population inmates to attack "skinners" like Jerry, and have a legal obligation to protect them from such attacks. I hope he lives a very long life in prison and his dreams are haunted by the faces of his victims who were brave enough to come forward to exact this small measure of justice.

He not only committed these crimes at the college, he also abused children through his non-profit charity for inner-city kids. If the prosecutors wanted to, I believe they could find strong connections to NAMBLA (North America Man Boy Love Association) within that non-profit. NAMBLA is run by some very smart and powerful men. They have made their group nearly untouchable.

The thing is, he probably doesn't think of them as victims. He probably thinks of them as 'lucky boys who've been initiated into sex by a kind older man.'

There was a big thread a year or more ago, here,* about the 'how to have sex with kids and get away with it' book that was being sold on Amazon, until Amazon removed it. Reading about that book and related situations made it clear that these people genuinely and sincerely don't think they're doing anything wrong.

They don't think of themselves as preying on children. They really think they are helping children.

They hide what they do with the rationalization that 'a few uptight, misinformed people don't realize how great it is for kids to be initiated into sex by adults, so I have to keep this secret.' Most of them probably believe that as Society Becomes More Enlightened, they won't have to hide, anymore.

It's to be hoped that this trial outcome will cause some of them to re-think their philosophy...it's one of the regrettably few times that society-at-large has made "THIS IS WRONG" the inescapable message for those who use children for sex.

That needs to change. I hope those vile men are running scared, today.

*I can't recall either the book or author's name, or I'd find the thread and link. Searching 'child' or 'sex' or even 'Amazon' (or similar terms) doesn't narrow the search enough.

I hope this disgusting piece of trash never draws a breath outside the walls of prison again. There really isn't a punishment severe enough for the damage he has done to innocent children.

I think he didn't confess because he never felt he did anything wrong. He knows exactly what he did to those boys, but he thinks it was okay. I bet that with at least a few of them, he had himself convinced that it was a "romantic relationship". He truly may never understand the freaking complete wrongness of what he did. Pedophiles, while knowing exactly whom to choose and how to go about it, seem to have next to no conscience when it comes to their actions. In fact, I would bet that he feels betrayed by the victims who testifed, not like the betrayer himself.

I read today that there may be additional criminal charges, which would mean another trial. In addition to his adopted son, there are at least 4 other potential victims in talks right now with prosecution. As well as a couple of civil suits against him.

Either way, with just these 45 guilty verdicts, he will spend the rest of his life in prison. He will first be sent to Camp Hill Prison in PA where he will spend a couple of months being tested and evaluated. They will determine to which state prison he will go from there. He'll stay there until he's about 79, at which point he'll be transferred to a prison for elderly prisoners. Either way, unless the defense pulls off something amazing on appeal, he will never be free again.

Part of being a pedophile appears to be emotional immaturity -- the inability to cope with adult relationships. And that immaturity also seems tied in to the self-centric perspective they bring to their actions. The interviews with Sandusky show a jaw-dropping lack of comprehension that his perspective is skewed. He's so fixated on the illusion that this is acceptable behavior that he can't even lie about it persuasively. The Peter Pan syndrome has taken over his brain.

This is one of the reasons I found Michael Jackson so disturbed, so creepy to listen to. There was no recognition that his fascination with young boys was age inappropriate. I am equally creeped out by the adults who defended him by saying he didn't engage in sexual acts with these boys. Even assuming that was true, it doesn't make his passionate overtures any less palatable. He was imposing an adult power play (wealth, fame, lavish gifts) in his relationships with naive, emotionally vulnerable children.

I've seen pedophiles that feel that there is nothing wrong with what they do. They really don't see that it harms kids at all. I have also met some that were eaten up with guilt and told me that they couldn't stop because it was such a strong compulsion.
