And, as Boing-Boing commented, he announced "Mission Accomplished" without a trace of conscious irony.

I was reminded of Robert Graves' poem:
Quote:
The Persian Version

Truth-loving Persians do not dwell upon
The trivial skirmish fought near Marathon.
As for the Greek theatrical tradition
Which represents that summer's expedition
Not as a mere reconnaisance in force
By three brigades of foot and one of horse
(Their left flank covered by some obsolete
Light craft detached from the main Persian fleet)
But as a grandiose, ill-starred attempt
To conquer Greece - they treat it with contempt;
And only incidentally refute
Major Greek claims, by stressing what repute
The Persian monarch and the Persian nation
Won by this salutary demonstration:
Despite a strong defence and adverse weather
All arms combined magnificently together.

After asking for comment on his voluntary dismissal of charges, Carreon lilted over the phone, "I'm famous, I'm notorious." Which, from the looks of it, is exactly what he wants.
which will make him popular with those that want to attempt legal protection racket thuggery, but pretty much kills his reputation for any serious work...

I think he may be underestimating the follow on effect of being shown up in his bullying... nothing kills a bullies rep faster than getting a smack down, and everyone becomes twice as likely to stand up to them.... if his next bit doesn't result in a slam dunk win, he may have sunk his career even as a legal cudgel.

I'm wondering what sort of work he's likely get in future. While I don't know how people select a lawyer for this kind of work, if Google comes into it, then no longer is Carreon going to be the guy who won the sex.com case but the guy who presided over this shambles, didn't get his clients the $20,000 they wanted and threw them under a bus instead.

Yeah, but I'd have thought that they'd look for a degree of competence, too.

If I were to hire a lawyer to put the frighteners on somebody, I'd want to have a reasonable expectation I'd end up with the result for which I hoped, and not a three-ring circus with my interests as ignored as those of FunnyJunk.

Just reminded me what else Carreon's reaction reminds me of:

I think the problem is that competency tends to raise ethics (or at least the cost of discarding them)... at that leve I think it just had to look good up front, not actually be legit... it's a bluff, and many people are unwilling or unable to expend the effort to call it vs folding.

IN FJ's case, what they really needed was to harrass, not to bluff...

Wow. Judging by the statements posted by Charles and Tara Carreon, they both sound quite certifiable. Even the smallest sampling induces vertigo:

Quote:
In any event, the salient point here isn't that some Web video got made [by the Carreons], but that it's up on a site called Rapeutation.com. The site, apparently set up just for the video, suggests that Internet users are (or have been) engaged in a coordinated assault on Carreon's reputation. It also suggests that Carreon was targeted by a "Distributed Internet Reputation Attack (DIRA)" in which "large numbers of both human and digital Internet zombies [were used] to proliferate unmanageable quantities of disparaging information in an effort to alter the conduct of the individual or entity."
If these people genuinely believe that "human zombies" have been employed by Inman, wouldn't that be grounds for involuntary commitment?

Similar personality types it would seem. Attempt to damage reputation of popular foe then cry persecution when they fight back.
