In any event she has more experience, accolades and critical acclaim than most people posting in this thread, so I'm not going to really worry about it. She also raised more money for the cause than most people here are going to make in a year.
I wish some of my work was included in university-level women's studies courses! (First I'd have to actually, you know, do some of that work beyond a blog here or there).

She has me beat on the money part, but only by a little if you don't mind equating a year's taxable income to a few days' Kickstarter fundraising. If she could sustain that level of contribution for a whole year, she'd be making umpteenleventy billion dollars! According to Uncle Sam, I'm "above middle income". That's how rumors start.

At any rate, I think she gave a very important issue some major exposure. In our current political climate here in the U.S., women's concerns are downplayed and dismissed far too often. So it's good to see a woman stand up like this and make a stand no matter how flawed or academically questionable the product may be.

With the money she raised, she could take up more weighty topics like reproductive health. After all, she's already suffered slings and arrows so she's "broken in" as it were and knows what to expect.

Food in the US is so unspicy. (Though you can easily find non-spicy indian, but I'm not sure what the selection will be in Kansas). My first two years in Australia were agonising, even though New Orleans is one of the few places where cuisine is hot by default. I've built up a tolerance to spice since moving here. I was with a Chinese friend a week or two ago who wanted to try out a Korean restaurant and I wanted to order some spicy dish and he warned me that it would probably be "too hot for a white guy" and I side-eyed him, but he ended up having more trouble eating it than I did. He was drenched in sweat by the end of the meal and I was like "I thought you said this was spicy?" and he glared at me.

I've never managed to build up a tolerance to spicy stuff. Jalapenos make my scalp sweat and chili gives me heartburn for days.

Kansas? If you order "Indian food" here, they serve you pemmican and corn soup.

I'm with Luc, the fact that people responded with overwhelming financial support, against the shit-ton of asinine misogyny does not negate critique of the the quality of her previous work, which I hope significantly improves. anyone can come to a important and valid topic with poor comparisons, but that doesn't add much to it's honest examination. hopefully the massive donation will mean both a huge expansion in the depth and breadth or research and comparative examples. We didn't get here in a vacuum, there's a history and even a counter movement to it all, with plenty to explore.

I'm not a gamer and I don't think anything she has to say will make any difference whatsoever. I think marketing and pandering will win every damned time.

But I still supported her project. It's my way of laughing at internet trolls. I think it's great she over-shot her goal by so much because of them. Poetic justice and all. I hope she uses the money for something wonderful and world-changing, or in some career-making move, but I'd also be happy if she wasted it on frivolous crap. It's hers. The trolls failed spectacularly and she benefited from their ugliness. Yay.

Right.
I would be insulted if people suggested that any academic work I produce would be subjected to less scrutiny than a man's because I'm a woman.

It's a valid topic that needs to be addressed, and yay that it's getting all this attention, but boo that it is not someone who's actual work on the subject stands up to a bit more scrutiny.

The only criticisms in this thread are entirely subjective opinions that hardly fall under what I'd call scrutiny.

Quibbling over a suggestion that a film which destroyed a primary race's home planet and 90% of its population and sent a character from a future timeline into the past to deus ex machina teleportation technology to the residents might benefit from replacing a couple of characters with female actresses is asinine to me.

You might as well just say "her videos are ugly," which would be a more legitimate piece of criticism.

I think, on the other hand, that some people are looking for things to shoot down about her and her prior material either to pat themselves on the back for being more clever or validate previously demonstrated biases about women. It's easy to wrap that up in "I'm providing objective criticism," but it doesn't stand up to scrutiny either.

Let me restate something I said earlier: If Ms Sarkeesian had presented a deep, footnoted, research project that was the result of years of intense study and documentation I don't think anyone would have paid it much attention. The attention span of internet users (me) just isn't that long.

Using her video blog format and hitting high points, restating something we already knew, actually had more impact. It got the attention of the bottom feeding trolls, for one, and their vulgar insults sparked the huge donation spree. The way I see it, she would not have gotten that kind of contributions had she gone 100% academic.

I also said that while we've had this discussion before, it never hurts to have it again and again. If gamers don't remain conscious of unfair female portrayals in games, it's just going to keep happening. Sarkeesian won't change anything with one set of surveys but she doesn't have to. It's part of a process, a rising tide if you will. Every little bit helps to reach the end.

That end will hopefully be more women in the game design business, and that will only happen when more women find games interesting and comfortable to play, when games are no longer designed to pander to prurient little boys who only want to see bouncing boobies.

Even having had the conversation repeatedly, people still stubbornly jam their thumbs in their ears and scream that it's not relevant.

Look at the comments on these articles (written by a guy) on Kotaku, demonstrating the primary gaming audience.
