Greek Neo-Nazi Politician Attacks 2 Women on Live TV

News Headlines

Quote:
Tensions ahead of fresh elections in Greece on June 17 spilled over in a televised political debate on Thursday when a spokesman for the far right Golden Dawn party physically attacked two female members of parliament from opposing political parties throwing water at one and punches at another.

Video of the incident, posted on Youtube but since removed, shows Ilias Kasidiaris in heated exchanges with Syriza party deputy Rena Dourou. The video shows both politicians shouting over the other. Communist party member of parliament Liana Kanellis is also involved.

Toward the end of the footage, Kasidiaris picks up a glass of water and throws it across the table at Dourou. Kanellis then jumps back out of her seat next to him and throws a number of papers at him. He reacts by pushing Kanellis and then striking her multiple times.
This is the Neo-Nazi party that picked up twenty-something seats in the last election.

This shocked me when I first heard of it.

Here is the loose translation of what was discussed:

Quote:
Discussion had turned to the country's natural resources. But it went off on a tangent about political history in Greece, which suffered a vicious civil war between Communists and the right-wing after World War II, and a seven-year military dictatorship that ended in 1974.

Kasidiaris, his temper wearing thin, shot an insult of "you old Commie" at 58-year-old prominent Communist Party member Liana Kanelli, in return for her branding him a "fascist." Kasidiaris, 31, who served in the military's special forces, also took offense at a reference by Dourou to a court case pending against him.

It all careened into violence when Dourou said there was a "crisis of democracy when people who will take the country back 500 years have got into the Greek parliament." Kasidiaris bounded out of his seat and hurled a glass of water at her, shouting an insult loosely translated as "you circus act."

Talk show host Giorgos Papadakis — shouting "no, no, no!" — ran over to Kasidiaris, attempting to calm him down. But the Golden Dawn member turned on Kanelli, who had stood up and appeared to throw a newspaper at him.

Kasidiaris hit Kanelli three times — with hard right-left-right slaps to the sides of her head.
Papadakis tried and failed to restrain him.

I think what bugs me the most is how the host is the only one who actually gets up to 'attempt' to help, although he certainly doesn't do much. Kanelli is the only one who we can say tried to defend a colleague (Dourou, who had water thrown in her face) by throwing some papers. When someone starts slapping another at close range like this, you should effing get up and help - at the very least shout the violent person down. WTF? I know they're all political rivals but jeez... what a bunch of cowards.

Yeah the lack of response from everyone else at that table was just unbelievable.

Actually, I just reread my post and what actually bugs or shocks me the most isn't the lack of politicians helping each other, but the neo-nazism. The lack of help for another comes in at second...

Along with some of the World Cup soccer fans in Poland and the Ukraine acting out, and in my opinion not being dealt with or taken as seriously as they should be, the rising popularity of these groups scares me.

So you're saying that nationalistic, right-wing xenophobes are alike? Interesting.

It happens very fast, nobody in the studio is likely to be expecting that sort of reaction, when things like this happen a lot of people freeze, it's not really cowardice, it's more shock.

Greek politician who attacked rivals on TV sues victims for defamation - World News

Quote:
A Greek far-right politician who hit a left-wing politician in the face and threw water at another during a live television talk show sued his victims for defamation on Monday.

Ilias Kasidiaris, spokesman of the far-right Golden Dawn party, said he would also sue private TV station Antenna for wrongful detention after he was locked in a room in the studio following the attack until he broke down the door and escaped.

Kasidiaris shocked viewers last week with the attack on Rena Dourou, a deputy in the radical leftist Syriza party and Liana Kanelli, a veteran communist deputy, during a heated debate ahead of national elections on June 17.

On the show, a spirited discussion spiraled out of control when Kasidiaris threw a glass of water at Dourou. Shortly afterwards, Kanelli swatted Kasidiaris with a newspaper, and he responded by punching her in the face with enough force to leave her bruised.

The 31-year-old former army commando went into hiding after the assault but issued a statement at the weekend blaming the two middle-aged women for deliberately provoking him into the attack.

"I have come to the prosecutor today to file a lawsuit against Mrs. Kanelli and Mrs. Dourou for unprovoked defamation, and against TV station Antenna for my illegal detention," Kasidiaris, dressed in a white shirt and dark sunglasses, told reporters outside the court.

By lying low, Kasidiaris avoided an arrest warrant for the attack. According to Greek law, the arrest warrant for a minor crime must be carried out by midnight on the day following the incident, BBC reported.

Kasidiaris was already due to stand trial on Monday on separate charges — which he denies — of helping assailants attack an assistant university professor in 2007, but that trial was postponed until September.
What a prince.
