17 Year Old Student jailed for missing school because she was supporting her family

Texas honor student jailed for missing too much school - CBS Atlanta 46
Quote:
Last month, Tran was issued a warning by the judge for missing school.
Tran said she works both full-time and part-time jobs, in addition to taking advanced and college level courses.
But the judge said Tran's case was bigger than the individual situation of one student.

"If you let one run loose, what are you gonna' do with the rest of 'em?," said Judge Lanny Moriarty. "Let them go too? A little stay in the jail for one night is not a death sentence."

But Tran's classmates said she had a lot more to juggle than the average teen.

"She goes from job to job from school. She stays up until 7 a.m. in the morning doing her homework," said Devin Hill, a classmate and co-worker.
On top of that, Tran said her parents spilt up and moved away, leaving her to support her younger sister.

The judge admitted that he wanted to make an example of the teen. Tran had to spend 24 hours in jail and pay a $100 fine.
This is just lower than low...

Making an example out of her also distracts from a system that wasn't helping a 17 year old support a younger sibling. There is no reason the parents should have left them behind to fall through the cracks.

What a rotten fucking judge.

I had to drop out of school when I was 17 because I'd moved out from home the year before; after trying for a year and a half to keep up with two jobs, rent and bills along with high school my weight was around 80 lbs and my hair had started literally falling out. I decided it wasn't important to me anymore and eventually got my GED.

Making an example of her? She was helping her family, kudos to her! The only example the judge managed to make is showing everyone what a giant dick he is.

Making examples of people is kinda useless and just breeds contempt. And this is a poor choice of person (one of the last people to deserve it) to make an example of.

For Justice of the Peace Lanny Moriarty, experience and his desire to help
people have paved the path to a successful and rewarding career as JP for
Precinct 1 in Montgomery County.

“As a people’s court, many of the cases are rather informal in nature and
can be handled as such,” said Judge Moriarty. “I try to be open and honest
with an attitude that says I care.”

With a successful tenure in law enforcement including 21 years with the
Houston Police Department and 10 years with the Montgomery County

human first and a law enforcer second.”

I registered to post a comment on the site Tracer found - it will have to be approved, which probably won't be until Wednesday.

I started a thread in a Houston city-data forum to see what the locals are saying about this. Hopefully they won't lynch me for being a Northern carpetbagger

yes... jailing and fining people for working really helps with that whole attendance thing.... because it's not like she'll have to work more to make up for the missed day and lost income.

this is exactly what is wrong with absolutism.... lack of common sense.

This is outrageous.

A good Christian judge would have found both girls husbands, and had their mother stoned for the whore that she is.

What is the great state of Texas coming to.

If you are interested in justice it is a shitty example, true, on the other hand, it you want to demonstrate that the only thing that matters is the assembly line production of interchangeable 'units' for consumption by industry according to proper bureaucratic documentation it's a great way to go about it.

Lesson well taught Judge. In your world the citizens are just generic parts of the machine and all that matters is having the right forms filled out in the right way.

It's interesting. My parents supposedly left the city to get away from that view of people as disposable assembly line components. However the rural areas seem even more hell-bent on implementing it than the cities are.

So if a kid misses enough classes in Texas, they send you to jail?

What do they do to kids who don't eat all their vegetables? Gas chamber?

In Ohio the parents can get fined or go to jail for their kid's truancy.

And here I thought hard work and ambition were supposed to be conservative values. See what I know.

And indeed where the hell is child protective? There's a minor even younger than this one who evidently has no adult caretaker.

That is the worst thing for these situations.

I grew up with my maternal grandparents and brother. When my grandpa died i was 16. My grandma was in her 70s, couldnt read, write, or drive. My brother was 12. I became head of the house. It was stressful. But we made it work.

My greatest fear was that Child protective services would find out. They would taken me and my brother away from my grandma. They would of split us up. I would never seen my brother and grandma again.

As far as prosecuting her parents, if they left the state it may be more difficult.

The best thing the judge could of done is suggest to her and her siblings become emancipated from her parents. That way they could apply for state and fed aid without having parents.

The law doesnt work well with "out of the norm" situations.
