Business: Black Operations Client: Singularity | I believe they mean "transforming back to the multiethnic country that we were before the waves of European immigration in the latter half of the 19th century". Or perhaps "transforming into the complex multiethnic country that Mexico has been since the 16th century". Somehow I think we'll manage to get through it just fine.

| I think that a lot of the batshit crazy we've been seeing from the Republicans over the last few years has been in response to this. They can't stand the fact that things are changing, and they can't accept the fact that they can't stop it. The war on women and abortion insanity - it's meant to force white women to have more children, and thereby put whites back into the majority. |

I think they are scared that they will be treated they same way they have treated others. They see themselves losing control of the country. I agree that it's a big reason for all the push to turn the clock back to a so called "better" time. They think it was better because people like them had control of the country and they have been seeing that control beginning to slip through their fingers-so they are tightening their grip.

| The more you tighten your grip the more will slip through your fingers. Didn't Princess Lea say something like that in the first Star Wars movie? |

I don't understand why people say "Non-Hispanic whites." Does anyone know what that means compared to, what, "Hispanic whites?" This is an important tipping point? This has broad implications for the country’s economy? Because people aren't people? Because Americans aren't American? How does the author believe these changes will manifest I wonder.

| How much do you want to bet when we become the Majority we will still be called "the visible minority" by a lot of people. it is a similar situation in canada where they say both Vancouver and Toronto will be majority asian by 2030.... I just wish one day they would just say the majority of people are "Canadian" or "American" and screw all this us and them attitude! |

My half sister's mom is a hispanic white - blonde hair [well, so I've been told], blue eyes - ancestors pure spanish bloodlines, and more arrogant than any teapartier. That's about all I think of when I hear the term - but I think its used to refer to most hispanic people unless they are obviously mostly of other stock [like, oh, native americans]. And you know what, maybe this would be a good thing - I think the world is a boring place when we don't have a wonderful mix of cultures in the pot. And honestly? What it really means is no one would be in the majority. | |

I find this a bit bigoted in and of itself, because Hispanic itself is an ethnicity, not a race. If Hispanics are considered either White or Black I don't think they really should need the ethnicity. *shrugs* |

Business: Black Operations Client: Singularity | I'll be more than willing to say that race doesn't matter when race stops mattering. When a Black man is likely to receive the same sentence for the same crime as a White man, when Black children graduate high school and college at the same rate as White children. When being pulled over for DWB no longer happens and when Black people who are stopped by police no longer have to fear being shot for no reason. When a Black Harvard professor can ask a police officer to leave his house without getting arrested. When Hispanic American citizens and legal permanent residents don't have to fear being thrown into jail and kicked out of their own country if they don't carry their drivers' licenses and birth certificates at all times. When police are no longer give laws directing them to stop any "foreign looking" drivers in border states. When ICE no longer operates internment camps where deportees are kept like prisoners while awaiting deportation that can take years. When that happens, I'll be more than ready to act like racial classes no longer matter. Until then, all that ignoring those classes does is allow racists to pretend like there isn't a racism problem. |

My Mood: SL Join Date: 03/17/2004 | I think plantation owners were out numbered on plantations and they still kept power. You can be outnumbered and still maintain power, and you do not even have to resort to entirely oppressive methods to maintain that power. One reason is not all minorities have the same agenda (I know that comes as a tremendous shock to some here), so just because someone checks a certain box, doesn't mean the identify with the box or fit into it. Secondly there are some issues in minority communities that cannot be solved in a generation or two. Lastly, as long as a small minority control the money and the power nothing changes. Last year it seems like the white people at the bottom finally realized they were being screwed over by the white people at the top, something the rest of us knew a long time ago. Even with all of the affirmative action, programs and everything else, there are few minorities in positions of power, even less when you do not count white women as minorities. All little facts like this do is make people circle the wagons tighter. |

Business: Black Operations Client: Singularity | Well, it would make it more difficult to prove that redrawn voter districts and new voting laws that are designed to suppress minorities' voting rights are in fact suppressing minorities' votng rights. Whether you feel that this is a good thing or not probably depends on your view of the 15th amendment. |

| You could just as easily say it's the secret of Mormonism or the secret of the Old Order Mennonites. I know an Old Order Mennonite woman who just gave birth to her 12th child. I tried to put "Flying Purple People Eater" as my race on the census, but it wouldn't fit in the box. So, I put, "human." When I did phone surveys some of our surveys asked, "What race or ethnicity do you consider yourself.." I got some entertaining answers to that besides the serious ones. |
