Rand Paul Says He Didn't Think Obama's Views 'Could Get Any Gayer'

Rand Paul Says He Didn't Think Obama's Views 'Could Get Any Gayer' - Yahoo! News
Quote:
Sen. Rand Paul mocked President Obama's recent support of gay marriage on Friday, saying he didn't think Obama's views "could get any gayer."
"The president recently weighed in on marriage and you know he said his views were evolving on marriage," the Kentucky Republican said at Iowa's Faith and Freedom Coalition meeting. "Call me cynical, but I wasn't sure his views on marriage could get any gayer."
So can we start calling out this usage of the word "gay" as the slur it is now? As far as I'm concerned, this is the equivalent of calling someone a "n***er lover" for supporting equal rights for blacks.

The lines are being drawn to institutionalize discriminatory practices towards homosexuals. It is starting with the laws that prohibit same-sex marriage and unions of couples not under the heading 'marriage'. It continues with little to no admonishment to children for calling people and things as being 'gay' in a derogatory sense. The children pick up on these things. They see that it is okay to be derogatory and discriminatory towards 'gayness'. They are told that homo-sexuals are against the teachings of God. That God, in fact, destroyed many of them long ago and does not want them in his kingdom. It becomes easy for them to rationalize separating out the 'gays' from everyone else when their adult leaders seem to be saying that it is okay to do so.

I used the term all the time. It's something I grew up doing, and was never meant as a slight to homosexuality, it was just a word to describe something ridiculous. I think I learned to use the word long before I knew what "gay" meant.

Words have power, and I've made a real effort to strike the term from my vocabulary. Sorry for any hurt or offense I've caused by using it I'm going to continue to use words like 'silly' instead.

I had used it plenty myself growing up. It took a while to really register the word for what it is. I'm not very happy with myself for it either.

This story really surprised me when I saw it. I wasn't so much offended by the word—as the biggest reaction it gets out of me is to roll my eyes—as I was surprised by his use of such a pathetic line. It really makes him seem like a childish lightweight. I get that teens and young adults use the word "gay" like that, and I get that it means something different to them. But to have a senator use it, makes him sound like a teen himself. That's not a good thing when his very title means "elder."

It is unfortunately common. I've had to correct my kids from using it and we are a family very supportive of gay rights, with several close family members who need that support. You could say we're a gay family and I wouldn't care But yes, I've heard my son spout out "that's gay!!" and had to correct him. Words ARE powerful. Anyone using the word around me "retard" gets corrected, too. It does matter.

I know a lot of people in the same boat.

There was an argument that there's truth in the usage of 'gay' to denote ridiculous, but as the right struggles more and more to make it a keyword for 'sic em boys!' that is changing.

And when someone can emotionally accept this, their ability to feel compassion toward any human becomes limited.

It makes it okay to harm other people for inherent characteristics they cannot modify. It justifies sadism.

At this rate, Senators will be calling Obama "poopyhead" by the time we get to election

A statement like that just shows how incredibly childish people like Rand are. It is comforting knowing they are on the wrong side of history and they will eventually die off, but not fast enough.

Its resurgence coincided with the election of Obama, which made all the closet racists come out in force.

Much like kids now using "I raped them" when they talk about beating somebody at a video game.

I made my kids and their friends stop using that kind of derogatory use of the word "gay" in the house. But I guess Rand Paul thinks it's OK for the senate.

Rand Paul's "constitution" only applies to straight white christian males.
