Bullied gay teen brings stun gun to school

This is what outraged me the most:

Quote:
After reporting the bullying to the school more than 10 times, his mother, Chelisa Grimes, said she gave Young a stun gun for protection, because school authorities weren't doing enough, MSNBC reports.

"I do not promote violence -- not at all -- but what is a parent to do when she has done everything that she felt she was supposed to do ... at the school?" Grimes told CNN's Don Lemon on Sunday. "I did feel like there was nothing else left for me to do, but protect my child."

Bullied gay teen brings stun gun to school, faces expulsion

sorry if this was already posted, I did a search on stun gun and didn't find it.

I'm really getting tired of schools turning a blind eye to bullying and the kids who are being bullied as the ones who get in trouble.

I get that the kid broke the rules.....but really, I'm not sure what other choice these kids have any more to protect themselves.

We just recently had a kid expelled because he protected himself against a bully a swung first. Yep, he was expelled for protecting himself. And another was expelled for trying to stop the fight.

I like it the way it is, makes me think that the gay teen literally created a "Sun Gun" and became a sun-themed super-villain.

I can't even begin to imagine how desperate this young man was to think that was the answer.

Unless the school will do something, he's smart to not say who it was, and given their record, would you trust them?

At my second high school, if you pulled out a stun gun, your life expectancy would severely diminish.

It is certainly a big problem. So many schools have a yearly bully talk, and claim to have a zero tolerance for bullying, but the reality is very very different.

There was one recent exception at my son's school.

A young teen with a slight learning disability was "pantsed" at school. Meaning another kid snuck up behind him and pulled down his sweat pants in the busy hallway during class change. The young man's underwear came down at the same time though, and he was understandably devastated.

The principal gave the offender a 5 day suspension, and 20 other kids got a 3 day suspension for standing by and laughing while it happened. Now I know for some a suspension is just a holiday, but still I was really surprised the prinicpal took this action because for the past eight years I've felt the board was simply giving lip service.

I have a similar story involving my kid. When she started 6th grade (first year of middle school here) it was a radical difference, riding the bus, dealing with 8th graders, etc.

The school had said they had a zero tolerance policy towards bullying, and when she came home after the first week and told me the sexually charged harassment she got on the bus, explaining it to me in tears, I called the principal.

That guy couldn't have taken it more seriously. The offending (and offensive) kid was yanked out for a week, and his parents were notified that if it ever happened again, he'd be expelled.

That was both a shitty and great week to begin my relationship with the school.

I was bullied throughout high school, living in constant terror of physical abuse .. I was utterly powerless to do anything about it and deeply depressed and utterly isolated. The only support I got from my parents was the time old advice to hit back. doesn't really work.

I think if I had been given a stun gun for protection I would have been for turning the tables, would not have ended well at all, so with hindsight I'm pretty glad I did what I did and got the hell out as soon as I could.

(In the end Karma came to my rescue and dropped my bully off a bridge onto powerlines. He's knocking about someplace still .. If anything I pity him now)

When you find yourself stood at the top of a flight of stairs every day wishing you have the courage to just hurl yourself down, if only you could be sure wouldn't fall short and end up in a wheelchair. Yeah, desperate is small and rather pathetic word.

I was badly bullied all through middle school and high school. Physically beaten up by other kids. Got dangled off a highway overpass by my feet. etc

I was frankly more afraid of what I would get from my parents if I fought back. Not that they ever physically abused me...they didn't. I just had that OOOOOO you are SOOOOO gonna get it ingrained so deeply in me I was terrified to step out of line.

Punchline to the story years later when I was 32 my folks were visiting and somehow the subject of defending oneself came up in conversation. I stated that I flat couldn't. I just didn't have violence in me.

It was then my dad popped out with. "Yeah all through school we were waiting for you to finally stand up for yourself against the bullies. You never did."

I was like well hells bells dad you could have told me years ago.

There is a tiny link that's easy to miss in the USA Today story that links to the student's interview on CNN. The interview is well worth the watch, particularly where he's talking about using the stun gun. He clearly did not want to use it.

Indiana mom sends son to school with stun gun to confront bullies - CNN.com

I am also wondering what law he violated, given that he was arrested. Are stun guns illegal in Indiana? It may have been against school policy for him to have the stun gun, but police have no authority to arrest someone for violations of school policy.

I believe the weapon free zone at schools is actually federal law. The stun gun would count as a weapon under it.

I finally found the specific charge. It's illegal in Indiana for someone under 18 to possess a stun gun.

The same article where I found that had a lot more depth to the story.

Bullied student faces expulsion, fired stun gun mom gave him | Indianapolis Star | indystar.com

Quote:
Grimes said she knew Young was gay even when he was a little boy. His personality differed from that of his twin brother, Darrell, and an older brother. He would want to put on her makeup and shoes, and his brothers would get mad and tell him not to do that. She said she always was supportive of his sexuality.

"Everybody in my family knew he was (gay), so we just loved him," she said.

Young lived with his mother until he was 7 and then lived in Arizona with his dad for about 10 years.

He became openly gay as a freshman in high school.

In Arizona, some of his classmates called him names such as "gay boy," but most accepted him and his sexuality, Young said.

Bullying was not a problem until he moved back in with his mother in Indianapolis and started at Tech last fall, he said.

When he arrived at the school, his new classmates were more confrontational. His outgoing personality and unique accessories made him stand out from the other students. Even some of the other gay students were unfriendly, he said.

The bullying started in October, he said.

"All day I'd be on my guard," he said. "It never got better. It always got worse."

Young broke down in tears when a rumor circulated that he performed sex acts in the bathrooms.

He said he thought about committing suicide.

His grades already had slipped from A's and B's to F's, and Grimes said he was losing weight. His problems at school seeped into his home life. He said the stress at school did not go away when he got home, so he would fight with his mother and siblings. He moved in with a friend and started missing school. More than a month later, he moved back with his mother and tried to get a fresh start at Tech.

But the bullying continued, Young said. It happened every day.

Students would bump into him in the hallways on purpose and call him names. Sometimes, they would taunt him in class.

...

Young and his mother said they told the school about the bullying more than 10 times, but Young said Tech did not formally investigate their complaints except for once when a student who taunted him during class was taken to the dean's office and punished.

Grimes said she called the school about students following Young home from the bus stop, but school officials said they could not do anything since the students were not on school property. When she complained other times, they brought up his sexuality.

Larry Yarrell, the Tech principal, said school staff were trying to help Young by suggesting that he "tone down" his accessories.

"If you wear female apparel, then kids are kids and they're going to say whatever it is that they want to say," Yarrell said. "Because you want to be different and because you choose to wear female apparel, it may happen. In the idealistic society, it shouldn't matter. People should be able to wear what they want to wear."

I can just imagine the lawyer for the school district banging his head on his desk repeatedly when he reads this.

Coaching tip, Mr. Yarrell, if you're going to be grossly negligent in a situation that escalates into a student bringing a stun gun to school...or could potentially become worse if the kid hadn't had the stun gun...you probably shouldn't go bragging about how you were aware of the situation and chose to blame the victim.

Ignoring the fact that it's impossible, as when you upload an avatar it can only be an image file and not a link or any other type of file, I'm sure you provided explicit links to Cristiano personally demonstrating what you believed to be the issue rather than drop it in the middle of a completely unrelated thread at random in order to make a bizarre accusation.

You've had issues with links and so on triggering some paranoid warning on your system in the past, despite the fact that no other individuals (even those using the same browser and security software) got a similar result. I think the problem is your computer.

Once again a bullying situation in which adults at the school were also complicit.

You'd think they were doing it on purpose.
