Completely shitty methodology. Just because the narrator has an educated British accent doesn't mean he is an authority: he is not even identified. So fallacy number one. The alleged sample is only American. Any broad view of history understands American version of Christianity is hardly representative of the vast panoply of religions throughout history. Including Christianity, which has had innumerable forms since even the fall of the Roman Empire. Let alone Buddhism, Hinduism, Native American beliefs. Anti-spiritual bigotry at its finest. So a whole bunch more of lies. Completely uninteresting hyperbolic propaganda.

I hardly expect a reply, since you are a clown or bot who posts videos without comment.

He is very much identified, he is Thunderf00t. real name Phil Mason.

actually it may not be, but I'm not racist for thinking all BBC speaking English men sound the same

Knowing that it was Thunderf00t was enough for me to immediately deduce that the video is full of horseshit.

It's unfortunate you see a screen name and react to it, as opposed to actually reading what was posted.

The video was terribly flawed as I argued, nothing you or anyone has posted takes issues with the actual points.

If I come across as an asshole, and I know I do, quite aware of it, it is because I am so tired of complacency and all the reductive defensive mechanisms I see all the time every day.

Truth is not subjective. It is an objective thing. Truthiness is a joke for a reason. You don't have to marry the messenger, you don't even have to like them, the dictum is simply don't shoot them.

I don't think your vitriole is really called for here - the video can be discussed on its own merits without getting personal.

I'm skeptical about the study he cited, but then I haven't taken the time to look it up and figure out his methodology or sample size.

That said, the message he's trying to convey is a rebuttal of the popular fallacy that religious people are by definition more charitable and compassionate than unbelievers - and furthermore, that without churches there would be no community charities. These assumptions are absolutely untrue.

The best definition for fundamentalism I've ever seen said that it was any religious ideology that valued doctrine over compassion. And on that score, the video hit at least one nail squarely on the head.

Are all religious people lacking in compassion? No, that would be as disingenious as what you've said in this thread. But by the same token, non-believers can be every bit as generous, charitable and compassionate as believers. I'm one example of that, myself.

I think the truth is that human evolution has produced a species that clings to community and bonding together naturally. It's the only way primitive man could survive against larger, stronger and faster predators. But it has nothing whatsoever to do with one's religious beliefs. It's just part of being human, believer and non-believer alike.

An interesting, if anecdotal, view from a Christian blogger.

Quote:
Actually, this doesn’t surprise me. Back when I waited tables, the Sunday after-church crowd was the absolute worst of the week to wait on. They took forever, were super picky, were terrible tippers and tended to be the most critical customers I had. It really killed me when, instead of leaving a tip, they’d leave a tract on the table. If you’re not familiar with these, they’re little booklets that some Christians pass out to try and save people. They justify substituting this for money because saving my soul is a far greater gift than a couple of dollars

Agreed, but in fairness this horseshit is just as offensive as the crap you hear saying that Atheists are less compassionate.

People are people, and compassion is or lack of it is not denoted by their faith or lack thereof.

Most are about converting the poor to their religion, and religious people think they are buying their way into gods grace giving cash away.

I'm utterly convinced that it's not morality, fear of god, or compassion that motivates charity among the 'more religious' but peer pressure, and a temporary boost to one's self-esteem.
