Rumor has it that Lenin lived down the street from the DaDaists in Switzerland and after seeing what they were doing and calling the modern art, he determined that modern art would not be part of the people's revolutionary state.

Yeah, but Hitler wanted to be an architect. I hear he was a hell of a painter.

Oops, just Godwinned an art thread. Sorry about that.

Stanley Kubrick made a 1x4x9 black rectangle both a piece of art and a spiritual icon.

Maybe its not the object, but how the artist uses it.

I prefer Scott McCloud's take.

Remember, the word "art" is neutral. It doesn't signify the work being "special", nor even particularly "good". Art doesn't need to have any meaning to it, it doesn't need to impart any special message.

Not to mention all that tedious brush washing and canvas stretching, the lazy bugger. (jk, actually really like some of his stuff)

Kincade's kitschy art, his marketing machine, and his aggressive and assholish business practices are a perfect mirror of much of today's American culture.

It's unintentional art, but it's not what we want to see. It's unflattering.

One of my favourite plays, Travesties by Tom Stoppard, turns on the coincidence that Lenin, Tristan Tzara and James Joyce were all living in Zurich in 1917; Stoppard has them all roped into a production of The Importance of Being Earnest.

Sample dialogue between Henry Carr, a British diplomat, and his manservant Bennet:
Quote:
Carr: Is there anything of interest?
Bennett: There is a revolution in Russia, sir.
Carr: Really? What sort of revolution?
Bennett: A social revolution, sir.
Carr: A social revolution? Unaccompanied women smoking at the Opera, that sort of thing? . . .
Bennett: Not precisely that, sir. It is more in the nature of a revolution of classes contraposed by the fissiparous disequilibrium of Russian society
Carr: What do you mean, classes?
Bennett: Masters and servants. As it were. Sir.
Carr: Oh. Masters and servants. Classes.
Bennett: (expressionless as always): There have been scenes of violence.
Carr: I see. Well, I’m not in the least bit surprised, Bennett. I don’t wish to appear wise after the event, but anyone with half an acquaintance with Russian society could see that the day was not far off before the exploited class, disillusioned by the neglect of its interests, alarmed by the falling value of the rouble, and above all goaded beyond endurance by the insolent rapacity of its servants, should turn upon those butlers, footmen, cooks, valets . . .

Real History and Adolf Hitler, the Artist

He was rejected from art school. Imagine how different the world would be had he been accepted.

When people say Hitler was a terrible painter, I am faced with the terrible truth that he was a better painter than I likely will ever be, and I also at one point wanted to go to art college.

AND I ANGST FOREVER.

FOR I AM WORSE THAN HITLER..

at art..

Thread Title of the Week
Actually, some of his art found way into my life.

My grandparents' house was quite a bit like the houses he depicted - though his pics were 100x my grandparents' house. Still, close enough to it to capture the house and its whole vibe.

So I bought a scrapbook with his art on it, and a number of scrapbook pages to go into it, for a scrapbook devoted entirely to my grandparents' house.

The idea came about because I have an absolutely idyllic picture of the house in snow, and several others which are pretty idyllic, and so much like his paintings. Just a fraction of the idyllic-ness in his paintings, of course, but a person seeing the pics of the house would understand why I would place them in a Kincaid scrapbook environment

So far, I've collected and collated all those pictures, but I haven't made the scrapbook yet.

I have room for all kinds of art in my life. While I wouldn't plaster my walls with his art, he was one of a kind, with a vision, and I appreciated the work . . . mostly for other people.
