It can be, yes. Vergil's Aeneid is in large part propaganda, but it's also one of the masterpiece's of Roman literature. The same might be said of medieval stained glass scenes or Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling, but they are also beautiful art.

Of course. Everyone gets to decide for themselves. There's never going to be agreement.

But if you're going to go around fixing my "not art" with adding "to me" by it, then do the same and add the "to me" when you declare something to be art. Especially something that anyone can empirically tell is not art.

Why is it so important to call something 'ART'? Because if we didn't call it that, we couldn't charge people too much money?

Just random, but I love post-WWII Russian propaganda... The stylized art is amazing even if you don't agree with the principle behind it.

And really, isn't most of the world's religious art, the ones touted as the Renaissance Masters really just propaganda?

hahahahahahahaha

you know... of course all of you do..
that you only think something is art because you were taught ..
this is art
this is not

in some way all of us were taught that..

but you can only be truly free of 'is/not art' syndrome by having belief in yourself..

why should you care if someone disagrees with what you deep down like to look at..

or why should you look down on someone who likes to look at what you think is not art..

modern artists are 'made' by pompous twats who decide who should and who shouldnt be considered an artist..

if some critique decides that 'Madonna Daubed with Snot' is THE art of the hour..
then it will be the art of the hour..

and everyone will ooo and aaah over it..

I used to watch ppl buy my stuff...
and there were all different kinds of ppl
the ones who would buy accordiing to price .. high or low
the ones who bought on the recommendation of others
and the most precious of all
the ones who would walk up to a piece..
look at it..
touch it
pick it up
feel it in their hands
and then buy out of personal connection with the piece.

thats art.. and the love of it... it is art to that one person because they cant help it not being.

That's not art.

That's poetry.

*retch*

I'm not even going to comment on this piece of racist shit.

Way to go, Eku, that really improves the discussion. [/sarcasm]

Definitely not one of da Vinci's masterpieces. Anyway, I'd say the same thing I said in response to the Greek amphorae example above, only that this picture communicates Christian symbolism.

I have no idea what to think of this one, what's its context?

And you misunderstood me again: I'm not saying that propaganda isn't art, I'm thinking that not all propaganda is art. You're too obsessed with thinking in absolutes.

Artist's Shit (Italian: "Merda d'artista") is a 1961 artwork by the Italian artist Piero Manzoni. The work consists of 90 tin cans, each 30 grams and measuring 4.8x6.5cm, with a label in Italian, English, French, and German stating:
Artist's Shit
Contents 30 gr net
Freshly preserved
Produced and tinned
in May 1961
At the time the piece was created Manzoni was producing works that explored the relationship between art production and human production, Artist's Breath ("Fiato d'artista"), a series of balloons filled with Manzoni's breath, being an example.
A tin was sold for 124,000 at Sotheby's on May 23 2007;[1] in October 2008 tin 083 was offered for sale at Sotheby's with an estimate of £50-70,000. It sold for £97,250.[2] The cans were originally to be valued according to their equivalent weight in gold — $37 each in 1961 — with the price fluctuating according to the market.[3]
One of Manzoni's collaborators, Agostino Bonalumi, claimed that the tins are full not of faeces but plaster;[4] in contrast Manzoni's girlfriend Nanda Vigo, who helped him produce the cans, claimed the contents really were faeces.[citation needed] Vigo's assertion is disputed by Manzoni's brother and sister,[citation needed] but some cans have leaked and confirmed they are indeed faeces[citation needed] — though whether human or animal has not been verified. An art dealer from the Gallery Blu in Milan claims to have detected a fecal odour emanating from a can.[5]

Oh, I didn't mean to say that propaganda cannot be art. But some of it isn't.
