Quit my job. Pay off my family's debts. Move to Santa Cruz and buy this house. Then...

Anything I want.

I like Dancien's list, only I'd run it backwards...
1) disappear off the face of the earth
2) take care of personal needs (not wants)
3) set up care plans for the decent parts of my family
4) completely waste 50K on absolutely meaningless crap so that I get sick of it.
5) Find a nice retirement spot where I can plan investments, charitable ideas, and travel to places I've always wanted to go.

Keep the island? Hell with that, it's target practice for the pirate ship.

I see where you're going with this.

Actually if I did buy property it would be something like this:

Atlas F missile base, Adirondack Mtns, NY

or this one

Nike Missile Base, Indiana

Basically away from people because as I get old I am discovering I have less tolerance for the talking bags of mostly water.

My wife and I were talking about just this last night.

First - we'd take the cash option, so we'd get about half of the total, but get it immediately.

Then:

1) You'll probably remember my rants about school funding. I'd fund our local school district. Completely. For an entire year, maybe five. Ten if I can set up the foundation correctly. Give them a chance to get back on their feet financially and restore program, personnel, and wage and benefit cuts. Then shame the state into doing the same for all the other districts with "their" half of MY winnings.

2) Pay off all our debts. All my family's debts. Buy a house. Buy a couple of NICE cars. Set up a couple of "safe" investments to live off the interest and never touch the principal.

3) Learn to fly. Buy an airplane. Fly. A lot. All over.

4) By a ticket for something I couldn't fly. From Richard Branson, for starters. If I'm still healthy enough, from the Russians. Or maybe Jeff Bezos. Hell, it's a quarter BILLION dollars... all three. Ad Astra!

5) Hire John Williams to arrange one of my compositions, and the LA Philharmonic to play it as I conduct. Yeah, I could arrange it myself... but why be stingy?

Now... what do I do with the other half? Hmmmm...

eta: Will SL run on a Cray? What am I saying... throw enough money at it and it will... Home theater = Omnimax. Talk about immersion!

It should be noted none of my money so far would be going to charity or any of that. Because I'm an asshole.

You could start an asshole charity. Like endowments & scholarships for college dwarf tossing teams. Jell-O Wrestling for the Cure. Baby seal hunts for the homeless.

Have a HUUUUUUUUUUGE party for everyone on SL that I like even a tiny bit.

Dont' care where you live, I'd fly you out to the private island that I bought and stocked with any kind of festive thing anyone could want.
You could even bring a guest or fifty

Pay off debt.

Once that's cleared away I would buy a few things for my apartment. Gut and redo my kitchen.

I would pay off the student loan debt of people close to me. I would assist in paying the medical bills of several people that I know who need that kind of help.

At that point, I'd put the rest away, and live off the interest. To be honest? I wouldn't even move house. I like it here.

I would give to charity on an even more regular basis than I do now (and I do pretty regularly now, as well.)

The charity can come from the half the government took. Or didn't give. Or however that worked.

In the Uk, lottery winnings are tax free! But you pay tax on the interest.

I'd spend it all! It would take me the rest of my life to spend it

Fortunately I am not a charitable organization, so you can freely give me money to "manage" and "exercise".

If I could set up a random frivolous charity, I might do something for Forever Alones, just because I think it'd be hilarious to see this on letterhead:

I would fly to the US and visit a certain someone so we can settle this cornbread debate once and for all.

After that?
I'm not entirely sure honestly.

I've always wanted to visit Corsica.

You stole my idea.

First I'd pay off my Brother's house, give my niece enough money to go to any college she wants with money to live off of, buy one of the surrounding vacant lots around my Parent's house and build my own house on one with a big Home Theater. The rest I would probably put in the bank and just live off of the interest and maybe do a little investing. Of course before all that I would make sure that nobody outside a few family members knew that I had won it in the first place.

I just found this that would put a damper on me even trying to win millions of dollars.

It's not really enough money to make a difference in the world, is it? It's a huge amount of money for these awful, amoral people at Zynga and Facebook who can now live it total luxury and without fear of poverty for the rest of their lives. But to change the world?

Really change it? Counter act Imperialist policy? No, you can't do that. You saw how fast Bill Gates and Oprah knuckled down.

No, you don't want that much money. Your life would be filled with misery, worrying about your money and the various shakedown artists in government and high finance who will take it all away from you. You will remember Microsoft used to be regularly in Anti-Trust trouble, but once Bill Gates started his Foundation giving money in lockstep with the older money interests, those legal threats went away.

Money won't make you happy, it will only enmesh you deeper in the jaded world. Too much money will enslave you as easily as too little. Freedom is the only thing.
