Which is one reason a 'social safety net' for the elderly is useful: it prevents the distortions in decision-making created by cultures that say (particularly) 'sons are responsible for the financial care of their parents, therefore daughters are parasites' and the like.

(True only in some cultures, of course--in others, all children of either gender are responsible for the parents--but this still distorts family-planning decisions.)

I can't wait until these kids start writing tell-alls. You know that with this many kids, that at least one of them is going to kick over the fence and spill the family skeletons.

The thing is, what probably keeps them going through the hard work of dealing with that many children is an unshakeable belief that they are Righteous and Admirable for having had so many.

You never lived in the countryside did you? Growing vegetables, having cows, raising chickens and the likes?

Because if you did I'm convinced you'd never say that.

It isn't unusual for cult members to look happy. Especially when they're kids that will get a good thrashing from mom and pop if they don't.

i dont know..
sitting around and arguing that ppl shouldnt have so many children is pretty much on par with sitting around and arguing that ppl shouldnt be allowed to abort ...

ppl should do what they want.. and should also take responsibility for their own choices.

also those ppls kitchen alone is bigger than most japanese apartments.

The are the Duggers, founders of their own Dominionist-style cult, complete with reality-television show. All of their income comes from exploiting their children, and is taxed sheltered by their claim that they own nothing, everything belongs to their "church."

Not that this is necessarily reassuring. But, yes. More earthquakes lie ahead in the near future, no doubt, for North America as well as for the rest of the Ring of Fire.

Nope, I've always been an urbanite, so you're right, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Maybe because you're not explaining much.

Is it more kids = more cows and chicken?

If a farmer has several kids, the land ends up either being divided between all the children, which often doesn't leave enough to be sustainable, or some of the children have to move to the city to find a job, which kind of negates your point.

While you are arguing retirement pensions and cows and chicken, I'm placing my argument on a global level. World population vs World resources. Doubling the World's population every 40 years is simply not sustainable, especially if everyone aspires to a decent level of comfort and safety. If we don't do anything to stop that growth, then economical and ecological laws will put us back in our place, with a lot more suffering and violence.

Overpopulation is the root cause of most of the economical and ecological problems in the World today, and yet it's the elephant in the room that nobody seems to adressing.

I just want to say how lucky you guys are that you don't know who they are. Every time this breeding machine drops another child, or has a not-very-surprising miscarriage (c'mon, you're over 40, and you have 20 kids!) they're all over TV and every freakin magazine and newspaper.

Yes you're right I don't explain much. If you were farmer you would know how important it is to have kids to help you take the cows back to the farm, or dig a well or whatever, even when you are still young. In China the farmers kill the little girls when they are the first born because the boys are stronger and they can only have one kid.

You are talking overpopulation, I am talking overconsumption. If the rich countries were consuming less there would be no need of reducing population.

Actually a war or an epidemy would be better than what you suggest because old people would die, if you remove the youngs instead there is very little chance of survival.

farming like this?

Quote:
Ministry of Agriculture,
Westminster.

Dear Sir,

My friend, in farming at the moment, received a check for £3,000 from the
government for not raising pigs. So, I want to go into the "not raising pigs"
business next year.

What I want to know is, in your opinion, what is the best kind of farm not to
raise pigs on, and what is the best breed of pigs not to raise? I want to be
sure that I approach this endeavor in keeping with all government policies as
dictated by the EUropean Union under the CAP. I would prefer not to raise
bacon pigs, but if that is not a good breed not to raise, then I will just as
gladly not raise Yorkshires or Gloucester Spots.

As I see it, the hardest part of this program will be in keeping an accurate
inventory of how many pigs I haven't raised.

My friend is very joyful about the future of the business. He has been
raising pigs for twenty years or so, and the best he ever made on them was
£1422 in 1968, until this year when he got your check for £3000 for not
raising pigs.

If I get £3000 for not raising 50 pigs, will I get £6000 for not raising 100
pigs? I plan to operate on a small scale at first, holding myself down to
about 4000 pigs not raised, which will mean about £240,000 the first year.
Then I can afford an airplane.

Now another thing, these pigs I will not raise will not eat 100,000 bushels
of corn. I understand that you also pay farmers for not raising corn and
wheat. Will I qualify for payments for not raising wheat and corn not to
feed the 4000 pigs I am not going to raise?

Also, I am considering the "not milking cows" business, so send me
any information you have on that too. Also please can I have the government
propaganda on set aside, what is the maximum amount of land one can set aside
and can this be done on an 'e commerce' basis on virtual reality land?

In view of these circumstances, you understand that I will be totally
unemployed, and plan to file for unemployment and full benefits.

Be assured I will consider you having my vote in the next election.

Patriotically Yours,

Yes it's crazy. They also destroy food instead of giving it to the starving populations.

It is on TLC here in the US, and I most fervently hope this garbage isn't exported out to the rest of the world. Seriously. It wouldn't be a proud moment for America.

They stopped calling it The Learning Channel around the time of their first Bigfoot "documentary."
