I heard this story on NPR months ago, but all I remember regarding their intent is thinking, "Oh. That's fairly benign after all." I do remember it had nothing to do with admissions and that it is voluntary.

I should make clear I don't think it is necessarily a good idea.

The admin types say it is to assure there are adequate services for LGBT students. Of course, you can't budget for what you don't know you need, so I can see it from that aspect. But tying it to their identity through admissions? That's most likely one of those well-intentioned but ill-considered California things.

(Apologies to current Californians from a recovering one ...)

It seems to me it could also be used as a way to say "we don't need to spend money because there's very few self-identified "this" or "that" this year. This is assuming that students would identify to a beaurocratic system that could keep that information in a file somewhere. Not all would be comfortable with that.

It's for demographic purposes... lets then divide housing and potentially see where services are needed or could be offered, which is why they want to do it voluntarily post admission, but it seems like something that would go better on a nameless form at best.
