The Republicans thought no one would elect a guy named Hussein the President of United States.

The Democrats have to be a little more proactive than just repeating Santorum's campaign babblings. There are a few million people that truly like what he is saying.

Well, carry on. But I won't get on that train.
That's because the worst is far, far more likely to happen. I doubt you read much into the conservative blogosphere or the talk radio circuit.

First and foremost, the rank-and-file are pissed at the whole field. If they could, they'd pick "None of the Above." They're ripe for some White Knight who's not running to swoop down and save them from the circular firing squad. Those White Knights aren't showing much interest right now. I'm convinced they secretly think that this will be McGovern in reverse-any nominee will get crushed in the Electoral College.

Second, it's been really ingrained since the 2006 loss of Congress that the GOP must move farther right. The day after those elections, I listened to the talk radio circuit blast the GOP, telling them, "They got what they deserved for not being conservative, for adding a new Medicare entitlement, etc. etc."

Third, the Tea Party (as co-opted by the Koch brothers and Dick Armey) has added an extra dimension of nuttiness by crusading against so-called "moderates," whom they feel have no place in the party. They gave us Bachmann and her ilk, the GOP frosh in the House whom Boehner can't control.

Obviously, he meant Santorum.

Now, it's easy to see why an avowed Democrat is salivating at the thought of a Santorum nomination. The Republicans will have their base secure, but what moderate in their right mind would end up pulling the lever for a guy who sounds more like he's running for office in 1812 than 2012? Not many. It would be an easy Obama win.

But there's another reason I really, truly, sincerely want Santorum to get the nomination: I want the religious right to lose, and I want them to lose in Biblical proportions.

I want the religious right to lose so resoundingly that the Republicans will finally be able to distance themselves from the self-proclaimed moral majority, which everyone has known since 1980 is neither. I want the Republicans to regain some sense of sanity, quit devaluing intellectualism as elitist and to stop acting like science is the enemy. I want the religious right to come out of this looking like a joke and ending up a funny footnote in history.

As much as a Democrat as I am, I want a (mentally) healthy opposition party, because I truly do believe that everyone benefits when there is a sounding board for ideas, rather than an echo chamber.

So, absolutely. Go Santorum. The nation needs you to lose. Big time.
I hope you are right Asher!
But I laughed when I heard that Ronald Reagan was running for governor of California. Since then I don't know how many times I've thought "It can't get any worse than this". And yet it does keep getting worse. So I'm afraid to get my hopes up.

I didn't think there was any way in hell Bush could be elected. He was so obviously a horrible candidate, a failure at everything he touched, a lousy governor.

And yet, whether by trickery or otherwise, he was in the White House for 8 long years of fail.

I'd like to *believe* Santorum can't win, but the best I can muster is the *hope* he can't win the presidential election. Yet like Asher, I really do want him to be the nominee for the Republican party. It's time we have some kind of measure for just how insane this country has become. Or not. I'm not placing bets either way.

I don't want to see Santorum nominated. I say this not only because he is fairly obviously unfit to be President, but for a much more pragmatic reason:

If Santorum is nominated, this will turn into an ugly ugly election the becomes "vote against the other guy". Additionally, if Santorum loses the general election...well, stop for a moment and think about what a die-hard Santorum supporter is going to be on the political spectrum. Crusaders often simply refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of an electoral loss because it's not "God's Will" or whatever.

But most importantly, I'd rather see Obama run against someone like Romney who will actually force Obama to be a better candidate, who will hopefully turn the election into some sort of competing visions rather than competing insults. I would like to see a Republican candidate who can't just dismiss the Affordable Care Act and especially the insurance mandate...because Romney himself signed such a bill into law in Massachussetts.

Honestly, this current Republican primary season reminds me of the 1980 primary, with Santorum as Reagan and Romney as George H.W. Bush. The comparison of Romney and Bush (41) is really striking. Of course, one major difference is that I can't see Romney ever accepting a Vice Presidential spot on Santorum's ticket.

Oh god, what if Santorum won and picked Palin as a running mate?

I think that would have to fulfill the eschatological prophecies of several major world religions. If it doesn't, it really ought to.

Santorum could win the electoral while losing the national vote. And the national vote does not count. Those conservative empty rural states get two electoral votes for each senator plus one on top of their votes per congressional district - just as every high population urban and liberal state. Add to that the shift in population to some of those reliably Republican states that has lead to their increased congressional representation and the electoral map is more challenging for the left.

I didn't think George W. Bush could have won the Presidency since the man was obviously retarded. Surprise!

Gore won - but there was so much cheating. My grandmother lives in one of those progressive florida counties - supposedly a democratic county voted overwhelmingly for Bush. Yeah, right. Then the SC, acting out of bounds, actually put their noses into it.

Thing is, for president, technically no one's vote matters - popular vote is taken for the electoral college, but technically, the college can vote however it pleases.

Given the widespread issues with potential voter fraud, probably not Bush.

It's part of my job, actually.

The worst is far more likely to happen? It's more likely that Santorum will become president? I don't even know how you go about figuring that. What evidence do you have? What polling supports it?

The fringe is loud, but it's still a fringe. You can't win an election with a fringe, unless everyone else stays home. And there's enough people voting in a presidential election that it takes more than just your base - it takes your base + independents + whoever you can grab from the opposition party.

So, again. Outside of the nuts calling in to Rush and Hannity, who is going to walk into a voting booth and say, "You know? I think what this country really needs is a Santorum form of the Taliban. That's my man"?

Patience, grasshopper. There's plenty of time for Trump to jump in, for Paul to think that his army of pot-smoking "I'll vote against my own best interest if it means I can buy weed legally" college kids will win him the election - heck, even for Palin to go rogue again.

Exactly, further evidence the GOP is fracturing. Let it burn and hope something better rises from the ashes.
