Subj: How swell, you're making your "charity" look even worse

You have now ensured that I will not only double my personal contribution to Planned Parenthood, but that I will tell my friends - two of whom contributed to Susan G. Komen after being diagnosed with breast cancer and who are pro-choice in the extreme - just what kind of hateful politics you are playing with the lives of women.

Planned Parenthood saved lives regardless of political stance - something you apparently cannot comprehend or accept.

We want a cure, we want treatment, we want access to that treatment. We want detection for all. We don't want a woman who will never have to worry about where she'll go to get a mammogram telling poor women that they're not worth the attention of your "charity".

This is the best thing you could have ever done to ensure that everyone knew you aren't a charity, but a business, and that your "care" for women is precisely... nil.

May your tenure in a position of power be mercifully short, and the damage undone by someone who is interested in kindness, not playing politics with the lives of women.

Dear Ms. Handel:

I am quite sure this is the zillionth email you've received about this. We can skip how disgusted I am with you and your organization. I'm sure you've heard that plenty today. It will save us some time.

As someone who (unlike you) raised money for cancer care and donated 100% of it to the person who needed it (you know, rather than running a charity like a business and being far more concerned with my "branding"), you're missing an important point when you declare yourself an advocate for health:

Health is important, even for people you don't like.

Advocacy for basic health care is valuable, even for people who do not share your goals and values.

When you tie access to health care to a political and ideological standpoint you throw away any integrity or mandate you had as an advocate for anything except being a political and ideological shill.

Which is exactly what you've become, and you've taken your organization down with you. Congratulations.

On the other hand, as awful as I think you are, I still think you should have access to any and all health care that might save your life. Because that's what *actual advocacy* is about.

Do try to learn the difference.

This makes me so upset on many levels:

Dear Ms. Handel,

When I was 15 years old, I went through a very trying period of life due to experiences as a younger child. I was wild, a little crazy and slightly out of control. I was also from a poor family with no health insurance and my father, wanting to make sure I was protected, at the very least, from pregnancy and disease took me to Planned Parenthood where I was able to receive internal exam as well as breast exams and birth control pills. This continued through high school and into my younger adult years due to not having health insurance through employment until I was in my mid twenties. Because of my father being proactive with a self destructive daughter and Planned Parenthood being available to our low income family, I was safe in ways that those with health insurance, a nice office that offers air conditioning might possibly never understand.

Because of your need to control other peoples bodies based on personal belief, you have decided that my experience will be limited for others. I find that not only appalling but also against everything the Susan G Komen Foundation is all about. The foundation was originally based on breast screening for everyone. Regardless of race, age or religion. It was meant to fight breast cancer through all avenues available and because of your own personal belief, you have altered the very basis of fighting breast cancer for those less fortunate then you.

I often ask how someone can do this to another human being? I understand that you have attempted to place blame for your very personal decision on inquiries as to whether or not funds from Florida where used for abortion within Planned Parenthood. But that still does not give me the answer that I seek. Not only has the allegations not been determined but even if there is guilt, it was one state that you used to further manipulate others into follow your own personal belief. And in the process, you have single handily made sure that thousands of woman die from breast cancer and cervical cancer by pulling funding from Planned Parenthood.

I would like to thank you. For yet again proving that those with claimed moral high ground results in many suffering throughout our country under the premise of religious convictions and political standings. My hat is off to you Ms. Handel for furthering your own personal agenda by using the health of others as your grand standing point.

I had already become uneasy with SGK and stopped giving to them for a number of reasons. Their litigiousness with small fundraisers who used the phrase "for the Cure." Their association with unhealthy products like KFC Chicken and growth hormone laden Yoplait Yogurt. This just cements in my mind the decision that they are not the right place for my charitable dollars.

This was the biggest hit suffered in Kansas when Gov Brownback signed his stealth anti-abortion bill requiring much higher standards of Planned Parenthood clinics to allow them to provide abortions than any other health care provider, effectively making it impossible for PP to meet the standards and the red tape.

Never mind Roe v. Wade. Never mind the general consensus of the voting public. Let's put a little power in the hands of zealots who find ways to circumvent the laws in their self-righteous quest to deny women our moral right to control our own bodies.

UPDATE: 3:40 p.m. -- Planned Parenthood announced on Wednesday that it has received $400,000 from about 6,000 donors since Komen announced it was cutting funding to the organization on Tuesday afternoon.
The donations "send a message to stand up to bullying and protect access to health care," said Sye.

Two upsides so far that I can see are that PP has received nearly as much as they lost in SGK funds in just 48 hours after the story broke, they may actually come out the winner here in the long run, as disgusted doners switch their support from SGK to PP, and that people are taking a closer look at how SGK is actually run, the brands they associate with, and where their money really goes.

Yeah, but there are still some losers here, including anyone else who loses funding if Komen sees a major drop in donations.

One thing that won't cost any money, and might help fund research without going through Komen is writing to your representative and Senator to ask them to increase funding to the National Cancer Institute (and perhaps for NIH as a whole).

This was the first reason I didn't want to give money, but since I can't discuss my activism at home [I get fussed at for stressing myself and others], it didn't hit my friends.

However, when I got the email from PP, I put down my foot. And what's doubly sad is, that the PP letter doesn't mention that it was directly a Komen decision, but just that they'd pulled support from funding screenings for those too poor to afford them.

Not sure if this is a anti-choice move, or simply an anti-poverty move - so they can die off and the middle class can become then new lower class.... or something. Basically, class warfare, not anti-choice.

Why are they giving money to Planned Parenthood and not state public health facilities? Illinois public health has free breast exams, and I am sure they could use more funding.
