Ron Paul's Homophobia In Context |Gay News|Gay Blog Towleroad

Quote:
As the furor over Ron Paul's 20-year-old, allegedly racist/homophobic/classist/sexist/whatever newsletters has raged on and on, more than one thoughtful soul has wondered if Dr. Paul might not be being quoted out of context. It is certainly possible, say, to imagine a context in which this quote might be harmless:

Quote:
...the largest blood bank in San Francisco ... holds blood drives in the gay Castro district, where people give at three times the usual level. Either they are public spirited, or they're trying to poison the blood supply.
... for example, by ending it with the phrase: "Though obviously anyone who believes that is a misanthropic crank who should never, under any circumstances, be taken seriously."

Well, now we know for a fact what Ron Paul really wrote, thanks to The New Republic. And man, he really didn't like gays. (And yes, it seems Ron Paul really did write these things, no matter what he says, because they're filled with utterances like ""Just because I favor the legalization of drugs doesn't mean I'm in favor of using them. As a physician, I know they're bad stuff.") TNR has scanned page after page of Dr. Paul's old newsletters, and again and again he displays the most atrocious paranoia -- he really seems to have believed, in the late 80's and early 90s, that the gays wanted to rape children, desecrate the Eucharist (which, to be fair, some of us do), die young of atrocious diseases on the taxpayer's dime, and give everyone AIDS.
TNR Exclusive: A Collection Of Ron Paul

Quote:
The September 1994 issue of the Ron Paul Survival Report states that “those who don’t commit sodomy, who don’t get blood a transfusion, and who don’t swap needles, are virtually assured of not getting AIDS unless they are deliberately infected by a malicious gay.”

The June 1990 issue of the Political Report says: “I miss the closet. Homosexuals, not to speak of the rest of society, were far better off when social pressure forced them to hide their activities.”

A January 1994 edition of the Survival Report states that "gays in San Francisco do not obey the dictates of good sense," adding: "[T]hese men don't really see a reason to live past their fifties. They are not married, they have no children, and their lives are centered on new sexual partners." Also, "they enjoy the attention and pity that comes with being sick."
Hey Ebola, bite me.

Ways it is different

ps. I don't think it'll matter for Paul at the ballot box any more that it did for Obama with his supporters.
Jeremiah Wright is not Obama.
Jeremiah Wright was not Obama's ghost writer.
Jeremiah Wright did not work for Obama.

I actually don't believe Ron Paul's claim that he did not author those newsletters. They are full of references to his work and references to Paul in the first person. There have been textual analyses that conclude that he wrote them. I don't find Paul credible on this as all. A more credible and acceptable response would be for Paul to take responsibility and admit his error and claim his worldview on race has changed. Sen. Byrd was once a member of the KKK but came to denounce and apologize for his past errors and lend his support to civil rights issues. His claim that he did not write is, to me, more damaging than the letters themselves because I can believe people can change.

By refusing responsibility he shows himself to be either a liar and racist or someone too incompetent to even run a newsletter. Saying he didn't write them does not account for their publication not just in his newsletter but under his name.

And let me repeat, Jeremiah Wright is not Obama. Ron Paul, the publisher of those newsletter, is Ron Paul.

That is one hell of a difference.

Of course, on this 1995 interview, he discusses the newsletters, and seems familiar with the contents (admittedly he only discusses the economic points in then, but I find it hard to believe he only knew part of what was in them)

Oh, I believe they were ghost-written. A lot of politicians don't have very good writing skills.

I write for politicians for a living now. I suppose you could say I do some of this ghost writing. It's up to the politician if they want things phrased in the first person or third, and the writers handle that as they're asked.

HOWEVER.

In my meager one week of experience so far, I also know that NOTHING is released until it has been checked, rechecked and the politician him or herself has signed off on it.

If you are a politician, nothing is worth more to you than your personal brand, and you guard that at all costs. Or you pay the price for not doing that. (see: Ron Paul).

He claims them in other contexts

such as this video

Ron Paul Took Credit For Controversial Newsletters In 1995 Interview (VIDEO)

but frankly, his authorship is immaterial. They were published in his name in his newsletter. There is not credible claim of innocence. The only credible claim is realizing he was wrong and changing his worldview, but it's telling that he does not do that. Instead he lies.

I can't believe Ron Paul would have the audacity to swat away someone's hand when they offered it because he was gay. He is lucky the guy didn't punch him. What a pathetic old douchebag.

Of course, a person can change over time after experiencing life. However, Paul has shown zero proof of change. He actually has proven that he has the same racist and homophobic view, and he is hiding his hatred behind a subtler mask now because he is aiming for higher offices outside his regular backwards area.

Beyond that, he has never apologized for the content of that newsletter. So, there is just no reason to think this is a case of a reformed hatemonger.

I just saw a comment on a story at Washington Post about Paul's ties to white supremacist Lew Rockwell that said it's impossible for a Libertarian to be a racist because they see everyone as an individual and not part of a collective. The naive idealism of his college age supporters is so cute I just want to pinch their little cheeks, right before I cuff them upside the head.

Former Aide: Ron Paul 'Personally Uncomfortable' Sharing Bathroom Facilities and Shaking Hands with Gays |Gay News|Gay Blog Towleroad

Quote:
In 1988, Ron had a hardcore Libertarian supporter, Jim Peron, Owner of Laissez Faire Books in San Francisco. Jim set up a magnificent 3-day campaign swing for us in the SF Bay Area. Jim was what you would call very openly Gay. But Ron thought the world of him. For 3 days we had a great time trouncing from one campaign event to another with Jim’s Gay lover. The atmosphere was simply jovial between the four of us. (As an aside we also met former Cong. Pete McCloskey during this campaign trip.) We used Jim’s home/office as a “base.” Ron pulled me aside the first time we went there, and specifically instructed me to find an excuse to excuse him to a local fast food restaurant so that he could use the bathroom. He told me very clearly, that although he liked Jim, he did not wish to use his bathroom facilities. I chided him a bit, but he sternly reacted, as he often did to me, Eric, just do what I say. Perhaps “sternly” is an understatement. Ron looked at me directly, and with a very angry look in his eye, and shouted under his breath: “Just do what I say NOW.”
Quote:
“Bobby,” a well-known and rather flamboyant and well-liked gay man in Freeport came to the BBQ. Let me stress Ron likes Bobby personally, and Bobby was a hardcore campaign supporter. But after his speech, at the Surfside pavilion Bobby came up to Ron with his hand extended, and according to my fellow staffer, Ron literally swatted his hand away.

I've read many news items on this topic and the comments posted from readers. There seems to be this crazy meme going around about how polls show Ron Paul having major support from the black community. I can't speak for all of us, but I'd really like to see a link to one of those alleged "polls".
