SF Rape victim calls for change

I thought this was highly unusual - she's 15 years old, she's suffered some pretty extreme brutality and her case is in the national spotlight. Most girls her age would stay home, heal up and maybe even change schools.

I have to admire this sort of spirit:

SF Rape Victim: 'Let the Anger Cause Change' - Crime & Courts News Summaries | Newser

Quote:
15-year-old student who was gang-raped as bystanders did nothing delivered a message of peace to a rally at her high school last night. "Violence is always the wrong choice," the girl said in a message read by her pastor. "We realize people are angry about this. But let the anger cause change, change that is necessary to keep our children, our neighbors, and our friends safe."
Quote:
A close friend of the victim said she may return to school, where she was attacked last month as she left her homecoming dance. "As long as no one treats her differently from before, she'll be fine," the pal said. "She's still the same person, just less trusting now."

I am scared on her behalf that someone will release her name and let loose the dogs of victim-blaming bastards who think that a rape victim should be shamed until she hides.

I admit to being really torn on the custom of not uttering the victim's name. First, I *strongly* believe no victim should be "outed" against their will.

On the other hand, though, I wonder if shielding the name doesn't ultimately do more harm than good. In not naming, I wonder if we're setting apart victims of this crime as different than victims of other crimes. I'm not certain what the message is here. We name murder victims, even. If we don't treat the victims of rape the same, is the underlying message that this, indeed, IS something to be ashamed of?

But it's complex. What might be an overall good could be hugely damaging to the individual. I guess that's why I really admire the victims who do speak out, let their face be seen and their names heard. It must take a hell of a lot of strength to do that, but what hell of a statement, too.

Surely its the individuals right to choose? Why does it matter with murder victims ; the rape victim hopefully still has a life ahead of them why make it harder.

I also worry about what will happen when (and I think it will happen) her name is released. There's too many sick fucks who can hide behind anonymity to attack her. I read an article a few months ago in Newsweek about a teenaged girl who was killed after taking her parent's Porsche and accidentally crashing into into a toll booth. The pictures of the accident scene taken by investigators were leaked, and now they are all over the net. Her father receives phone calls from strangers who say they are his daughter and then go on to say some of the most vile things imaginable. The family has tried to fight back while at the same time attempting to shield their younger daughters from seeing pictures of the sister dead and nearly decapitated, which strangers can view for a thrill.

I hope this girl's name and image can be at least somewhat contained and protected.

Especially since she's only 15 years old.

I cringed reading that. I think that would be such a bad idea.

If she has balls that big, I can only imagine the shame she could inflict on those who did nothing to help her. All it would take is a look.

And if she can take the heat, she'd be an amazing role model.

I think people forget that a strong component of rape is about humiliating and making the woman helpless. To get back up and kick ass is the antithesis.

A nice little story about the girl who did call for help:

[While Dozens Gawked at Richmond Rape, One Brave Girl Called 911]

She does mention how "snitching" is frowned upon by the community:

Vargas said she does not believe there is such a thing as "snitching," especially in a case such as this. Calling for help, she said is just the right thing to do.
This makes perfect sense -- it wouldn't surprise me if she becomes a bit of a pariah.
