Backscatter x-ray machines "tear apart DNA"

Quote:
While the conventional wisdom has held that so-called "terahertz radiation," upon which backscatter x-ray machines are based, is harmless because it doesn't carry enough energy to do cellular or genetic damage, new research suggests that may be completely wrong.

Specifically, researchers have found that terahertz radiation may interfere directly with DNA. Although the force generated is small, the waves have been found to "unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication."

Gigs already posted that link in the last thread you started. So I guess you just opened the door, tossed in a bag of flaming poo, then went on your merry way.

Lately, I've wondered why you bother to visit SLU. I only see you here when you want to be a condescending ass or harp on some America(n) bashing.

So seriously, what's your deal?

Ponder this ... your true-believer fanaticism to your chosen ideology is just as mindless as anything you accuse other of.

Yet one in a long line of things that we create, think are safe, then with increased learning and knowledge, find out there are actual problems.

Examples:

Lead - Romans used lead drinking vessels.
Mercury - Mercury thermometers.
Radioluminescence - used on watch hands and other things.
X-rays - Originally people thought there was no harm at all with them.

You could just curl up and hide in a paper box, but the cardboard may have been chemically treated.

Or you could go hide in a cave in the woods, but it could have natural radon, uranium, sulfer, etc. Or the bears might eat you.

Never figured it was.

[Edit: Seeing your "disagree" let me amplify. There is a big difference between RR's hyperbolic post equating scanners with child porn and talking about scanners as a health risk, yet her name calling and condescending attitude remains the same. IMO, she has an agenda when she comes here and I'm tired of it.]

However, there's only two issues I wax fanatical on - universal health care and dark chocolate truffles.

I don't get what point you're trying to make. This wasn't done deliberately, as some Big Brother attempt to control the population by telling them to submit to x-rays, all the while knowing it would be harmful.

Our history is pretty much littered with bad advice given by well-meaning people and accepted as a treatment until facts proved it otherwise. Like blood-letting or taking potions made of ground up jewels. It seemed like a good idea at the time....

Or: Randoym is neither but instead is a passionate person with a young kid who travels a lot and was alarmed at the thought of these scanners. I disagreed with her and thought her approach did her more harm than good. But that doesn't make her a joke or unbalanced.

So, it was a joke. A poster simply dumping news articles and providing zero relevant opinion on it is supposed to be taken seriously?

Otherwise genuinely tying it to some vague conspiratorial nonsense simply reads like the ravings of some paranoid schizophrenic.

Also, forgive the 'groans' from Tracer (that I subsequently removed) . My daughter was using my computer, and I was skimming on his.

I fully accept those groans.

PS. These things are probably dangerous. Of course we also attempt to kill pieces of RNA and mix them up in a solution of fetal cells, and egg yolk to cure us of disease. So who knows, maybe it will have a good outcome. We might all get super powers and defeat the evil Zurg .

It's funny, all those things you cite are actually pretty safe, and are mostly associated with danger because of extenuating circumstances.

The Romans actually used lead salts for flavoring in their wine. it wasn't the drinking vessels. Metallic lead in dishware does not dissolve at any appreciable rate.

As an example, in a lot of cities, lead pipes for city water supply lines are still in use and were installed new until 1970. Their contribution to lead in the water is mostly negligible, but the water that sits in them overnight can dissolve enough lead to matter.

Mercury in thermometers... same deal. Metallic liquid mercury is almost non-toxic. It has a very low bioavailability. Mercury vapors on the other hand... those will get in you easily. People who messed with heated mercury or mercury compounds that could vaporize were the ones that got sick.

Radioluminescence on watch hands: also pretty much completely safe... for the wearer at least. It wasn't so safe for the girls that painted the faces by hand who were exposed to the paint and were licking the brushes to get a nice point on them. Their jaws fell off and rotted from the toxicity and radiation exposure.

X-rays: This is the only one which is somewhat dangerous in your list. Many of the old machines exposed the patient/user/whatever to pretty high levels. Modern X-rays... well, lets just say owning a granite countertop or being a frequent flyer might exposure you to more mrem than getting a modern chest x-ray a few dozen times a year. Smoking, for example, exposes you to about 2000 mrem a year additional radiation, and in the worst place, directly to your lungs. Getting a chest x-ray is only 10mrem these days. Living at a high altitude will score you an extra 500mrem a year or so too.

I'm not understanding how the fact that these scanners may be dangerous in a completely different way from Randoym's original "zomg, pedophiles will be ogling my child!" post makes anyone who disagreed with her sheep.

It sort of reminds me of Taco's little escapade with the Wite character, actually.

They used to have x-ray machines in shoe stores. They would x-ray your feet and try to fit shoes based on the skeletal structure of your foot. it was all a novelty, and there was no training whatsoever for the shoe salesmen who were operating the machines. No shielding, no protection, and the x-rays were just blasting away at incredibly high rates.

Not even a sign that said "do not stick your head into machine as a joke"

Bad times.

Hey man, it's all cool. I don't read enough in this section to keep tabs on all this inter-connected hubbub. I saw a seemingly crazy post, which received a reply reinforcing its crazyness. SLU can be a thorny beast and I got pricked.
