I can only assume that as soon as Obama had a peaceful thought, prepeace informed the Nobel Foundation.

I love my President - but I have to agree this seems to be a publicity stunt.

It sort of takes the seriousness out of the Nobel Peace Prize.

He has not even bought the troops home yet - or developed the plan for socialized medicine. I am not saying he will not make these things happen - But he needs the time to get started.

I can rationalize that in anticipation of him making these ground breaking changes he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

But I know that Obama's publicist used all the power he had to make this happen.

Obama learned from the Clinton administration - prop yourself up while the Republicans tear you down so you don't get snowed under and disgraced out of office.

I also think it is too soon - he has not even been in office for a year. It seems an odd dichotomy to give him a peace prize when we are still waging wars on two fronts. No, he did not start them, but he is continuing them. I think Obama is doing an extraordinary job given all that he has to deal with, but this was premature.

He had been in office 9 DAYS when the voting closed. This was not an award given based on his accomplishments, but instead, an award given based on his vision.

It was a 'good show' prize.

A sort of acknowledgement to the fact that a black man was foolish enough to run for president in America, win and wasn't murdered before being sworn in.

This award is not about what Obama is. It is about what, or more to the point who, Obama is not. This is also the first Nobel Peace Prize that isn't. America has just gotten a slap on the wrist for its global actions during the last decade. Our leader has just won the iconic award not for good behavior, but for stopping bad behavior. This is the strongest message the international community has given America that isolationism and self interest are not good leadership qualities.

We won't learn, of course. America was founded on the premise of givng the outside world the finger. I don't think we will ever be free of our resentment against the rest of the world. Not until we are humbled.

I'm not sure they should have awarded him the Nobel Peace Price at this juncture in his presidency, but I view this as a statement of how bad the Bush Admin treated the rest of the International community. From Bush's creepy Merkel backrubs, to sending anti-UN figure Bolton as the UN ambassador to our unilateral policy making on the international scene (Iraq). I think perhaps this is a response to Obama's early efforts in his presidency to re-establish international co-operation and his pre-disposition to sensible political positions. Also, some his initial efforts were committing to a time-table for Iraq withdrawal and closing Guantanamo. He has also made official our adherence to the Army Field Manual in the treatment of detainees. He has spoken internationally on serious levels of Nuclear disarmament has adopted diplomacy with hostile nations.

While he has not accomplished a whole hell of a lot yet in his Presidency, and I think this award may have been premature, I do imagine the whole international climate is breathing a lot easier now.

He had been in office 9 days when nominations closed. Voting took place after that.

Your second sentence is most likely correct though.

"I am both surprised and deeply humbled," Obama said from the White House Friday morning.

He said he does not "view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments," but rather as a "call to action" for the United States and other nations tackling global issues.

"I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honored by this prize," he added.

I honestly think that this is something of an implied message that goes along with this award. "Thank you America for ending your 8 years of retardedness"

Just came across the following article:

Robert Naiman: Nobel Committee, Strategic As Ever, Taps Obama for Peace Prize
Quote:
Some initial commentary has called the award unprecedented and wondered why the committee would give President Obama the award when he "hasn't done anything yet."
But anyone who thinks this award is unprecedented hasn't been paying attention.

The Nobel Committee gave South African Bishop Desmond Tutu the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his leadership of efforts to abolish apartheid in South Africa. Apartheid wasn't fully abolished in South Africa until 1994. The committee could have waited until after apartheid was abolished to say, "Well done!" But the point of the award was to help bring down apartheid by strengthening Bishop Tutu's efforts. In particular, everyone knew that it was going to be much harder for the apartheid regime to crack down on Tutu after the Nobel Committee wrapped him in its protective cloak of world praise.

That's what the Nobel Committee is trying to do for Obama now. It's giving an award to encourage the change in world relations that Obama has promised, and to try to help shield Obama against his domestic adversaries. The committee is well aware that history is contingent and that Obama might fail. It knows very well that the same country that elected Obama also gave the world George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan.
Makes sense to me.

Nobel intended his prizes to be given for past accomplishments.

Between this and Krugman, it seems that the Nobel prize is really losing credibility. In a few years they'll probably give one to Hannity.

You could say they already lost credibility when Kissinger got his. Well before Krugman and Obama. Did you? Or only when the recipient doesn't fit your idealogy?

Fair enough. Do you have a current opinion on awarding the Nobel to such choices as Yassir Arafat and Henry Kissinger? Or even Jimmy Carter and Al Gore. Were those credible?
