Want to Understand the Housing Crisis? Look at Beanie Babies

This is an interesting look at the economic concept of bubbles (most recently seen in the housing market), as illustrated by what happened to the market for Beanie Babies:

I dont think that the article takes into account that there is only so much room in/on a middle age woman's cubicle desk and drawer space.

Critical mass!

Consider the recent but underreported bubble in fashion handbags. Maybe you missed it, but until the recession kicked in, handbags were the hottest of fashion accessories, made from ostrich, alligator, buffalo or plain-old patent leather, adorned with studs, zippers or pockets.
This made me chuckle cause it made me think of a lady in my department who, over the course of the summer, bought 7 (S.E.V.E.N) Coach bags cause 'they were all the rage".

Um, my coach bag only cost 30 bucks for the real deal. Gotta love consignment stores in a populated retirement state. I nearly pitched a fit at paying that, but it was only thing I found that was small enough for me to carry and large enough to fit everything I needed. The "Coach" thing I found out after I liked it.

We were witnesses to when the current housing bubble started going south. One of our friends was getting selling his house for 140k. It wasn't worth 80k but that's what it got appraised at. The house he moved to, he wound up going into foreclosure and having his mom bail him out. If we would have gotten caught up in that craze, I shudder to think where we would be.

I never was much for gambling, the lotto, or Beanie babies. I didn't get a Furby, either. A penny spent on food storage is a dime earned, or something like that.

I would like to be written into Mocksoup's will. Something tells me she has hundreds of thousands of dollars in some loft in a barn out back "because banks are unreliable".

A long time ago I worked in a gift store that stocked Beanie Babies, and it was amazing the people who would wait for the new batches to come in. Some were cute and I have a few, but I quickly tore off any tags - I can't stand stuffed animals still having tags.
Then when the craze died down there were still a few diehards that would come to purchase the latest ones. I know of quite a few people who lost money on them.
For me though, I can't see spending all that money unless you actually enjoy them.

That never stopped my mom. When the Beanie Baby craze was in full swing her house was like the Enterprise in the Tribbles episode, I'm not kidding.

I'm sure that's just an excuse, 'cause you have an MRI machine out back and you do back alley imaging for the community. Because you care about the community, and their health. And their $5000 dollars. And the immense empire of black market health services you offer, along with savory meat pies.

I'm not so sure anymore that that is beef in your freezer.

Funny thing about Burberry is that they really stepped up their marketing in the US for the past few years because the label doesn't have the same chav connotation that it has (had?) in the UK. I wonder how many people in the UK felt that their Burberry lost value because the chavs "ruined" the label?

With Burberry, I do think it's just that particular print (that beigey browny one above on Daniella Westbrook) because so many 'chavs' wore it on baseball caps and scarves. And usually fake Burberry too. Even when it's real, that print always looks fake to me.

I sure wouldn't say no to a Burberry bag (well, as long as it's not in *that* print!)

Oh god, Radley. When I used to be a snooty department store salesman flogging handbags and suitcases to people, Radley was like crack for some women. The company would just change the colour of the leather used to make one of the Scotty dogs and they would lose their minds "OMG HE IS PINK!!! AND IN A CAR ZOMG ZOMG TAKE MY £300 PLEASE!!!". Crazy.

My sister suffers from this condition, she has three or four of their handbags, the purse, the notebook, the umbrella and I think a small hip-bag thingy too.

Ha! That's how I feel about Lous Vuitton. Everytime I spot someone wearing an LV bag, I'm scanning the seams to see if it's an obvious fake. I honestly don't even know why people wear LV anymore (real or fake)- I can't possibly be the only person who scrutinizes the bags, can I? Who could handle that type of scrutiny on their bag?

I have a couple LV bags but I rarely use them any more because everyone and their mother has one.
