I had a discussion with a friend about drugs yesterday, we generally have differeing views on it.

I'm of the opinion that all narcotic substances should be legalized, and taxed. Essentially creating new economic products. I feel that such things being legal, would lead to them being much more affordable, so people wouldn't need to turn to crime to feed their addictions. Free from "street" additives and contaminations. And people who want to stop would find it easier to ask for help, without so much stigma. It would also remove a funding source from organised crime. Or at least, make drug trade far less profitable.

My friend agrees with me, to a certain degree. But he thinks that some drugs like heroin and crack should remain illegal, because of the addictive properties. The crux of his beliefs seemed to be that these substances leave the user with no free will in regards to stopping, and leave people unable to function. He also believes that the easy availability and low costs, would lead to higher addiction rates.

I can't say one way or the other, if those things are true, but I generally believe that if people want to fuck up their life, it's their own decision to do so. I really don't like laws which take away freedoms to "protect" people.

But I'd like to diiscuss this sort of thing, if nobody else has another topic to debate on.

Well I agree with you. But for hard drugs with really additive properties, I think the drugs should be available under a doctor's care. Drug addiction should be seen as a disease rather than a sin or a vice.

I gather you have some experience at debates held on the Internet . In a recent debate I was involved in I was told I should use my intuition instead of relaying on pure intellect and readable data - Is this so ? Have I been doing it wrong ? , My confidence has been severely knocked since hearing this as it invalidates all my previous techniques.
