People's unhealthy obsession with celebrities has always made me a little queasy.

There's actually been relatively few celebrities with the same sort of status as Michael Jackson, that have caused this kind of worldwide reaction. Princess Diana, John Lennon, Elvis Presley.

Not so long ago, there was Jade Goody in the UK. While it's tragic that a young woman in her twenties dies of cancer leaving two young sons who's father's locked up in jail*, it baffled me why people got so bothered about this particular young woman. She became famous for nothing except being a loud-mouth. Why did the nation mourn her so much and not the thousands of other young people who die in similar tragic ways? Only because the media said so.

*and he's not even their biological father, just the latest bloke she was living with.

It doesn't really have to reach the fervor of Michael Jackson's death to be sickening, though. Look at America's obsession with whether Linday Lohan wears panties or not, or John and Kate's family life.

BLEH!

There's always been a certain fascination with getting the inside scoop on celebrities' lives, hence the popularity of shows such as John & Kate, Cribs, and especially all the lurid exposé shows on Anna Nicole's overdose and the downward spiral of that guy from Milli Vanilli and... well, you get the picture.

One of the newspapers were calling her the 'common people's Princess Diana'.... I would have laughed if it wasn't such a jaw-droppingly retarded statement. I think Princess Diana did a bit more than suck someone off on reality TV, racially bully an indian housemate, got naked when she was pissed, and generally was as stupid as pig shit. It's like calling Paris Hilton the Mother Teresa of this generation.

I can't for the life of me think why she was so popular in her last weeks. It was not so long ago they were burning effigies of her in the east, and the media were rightfully outraged about her shamefull and ugly behaviour on live TV.
