Because ... there are no words ... it is truly ... new.

Since ppl cannot say "death to ahmadinejad" or such, they say "allah o akbar" which is "god is great"

I had never seen this much harmony in ppl.You can now see how iranians are united with each other, it's truly an amazing

sight From Chizar Sq. I can hear people shouting their heart out from Qeitarieh & Andarzgu St.! and cars honking! Way to go ppl!

I always thought Twitter was an annoying website, an annoying idea ... who would have thought it would be here, in history books? I didn't.

There is a significant Iranian population here in Los Angeles, I used to work with them in my previous job. Unfortunately I don't work with Iranians anymore; it would have been good to get their perspective. Anyway, they're probably pissed too, I guess.

In nearly every communication and networking medium there is a lot of annoying stuff, a lot of chaff, a lot of trash, drivel and idiocy. But in those very same media are veins of gold as well.

Though I have a twitter account, I don't use it because it wasn't working for me. But Twitter has on several occasions shown itself to be an important communication medium, this is another of those occasions.

I guess this is less about Twitter (though I have to admit it's fascinating) and more about how there is complete anger, fear, and pandemonium over there.

Awesome.

The message is in the medium, any medium the people wish to use.

I don't have words to express how impressed I am by the Iranians in this movement.

No kidding. The only reason we are sure it won't become another Zimbabwe is the oil. Middle Easterners are generally a very passionate lot. I am expecting that either there will be massive clamping down (which I think is already happening) or serious uprising (more than what we see now).

IMO, there will be blood, lots of it.

Yes, it is a very odd thing how the major US news services took 24 hours to even begin covering this huge story while twitter and indirectly, sites like reddit and digg were covering it right away.

Andrew Sullivan is following the whole thing. Great reads there. I'm taking this with a huge grain of salt. Last time Iranian students revolted they took hostages in the American Embassy and put the Ayatollah Khomeni on the throne.

Several events in the past year have really made Twitter come of age. People knock Twitter as just being a venue to find out when someone has to pee, but it is a very unique form of communication - kind of like having all the IMs in the world be public and searchable. Of course, 99% of what people talk about is mundane and useless, but that 1% is incredible.

The situation in Iran is the perfect example of how up to the moment communication made possible by text messaging to Twitter even when net access is down is changing how we get news about what is really going on.

Yes. Between that and uploading pics from cellphone cams, people can really get the lowdown when the authorities prevent the usual outlets from these kinds of events.

The first Iranian revolution - this may not be one, but if it is, hey - a lot of the students didn't want theocracy. My exhusband's first econ professor was one of them.

It's a sad story, repeated too many times - people working for change only to have their work co-opted into something diametrically opposed to what they worked towards...

Revolutions are dangerous things. Like "controlled burns" intended to protect against wildfire, they can and do get loose and burn everything down.

Probably the only way to get Iranian news, now that they've banned domestic and foreign journalists from covering the riots.

Riveting reading with the included video. Thank you so much! In this sometimes sad world, there are places from which to learn the awfulness of bad government and here is one of them.

Yes. Very compelling illustration of Twitter. And of people's yearning for freedom and for free speech.

I read at one point where they were putting out a call for - what is it? more servers to host it? more portals? I don't know the technical terms. But apparently the government was trying to shut this down.

Free speech is my highest valued of all the freedoms. Coupla others are intensely important to me too, but this has always stood head and shoulders over the rest somehow.

Twitter - for enabling people to speak to the world, rather than being trapped in their bodies, in their lands; their voices and souls muffled - is a most astonishing and inspiring form of media.

Specially since we made fun of all the "twittering" and the "tweets." (Which deserved to be made fun of, but still.)

Iran Tightens Its Fist on Reporters; 11 Iranian Journalists Arrested « News Cycle

Just a portion of the blog post:

The service of the leading mobile phone operator, which is state controlled, has been suspended since 10 p.m. on 13 June. The SMS messaging network has been cut since the morning of June 12, preventing use of Twitter.

The blockage of the foreign media has been stepped up. In addition to the blocking of the BBC’s website, the Farsi-language satellite broadcasts of the VOA and BBC – which are very popular in Iran – have been partially jammed. The BBC reported that their Farsi broadcasts have been the target of significant jamming “coming from Iran” since 12:45 Greenwich Mean Time on June 12, and that the jamming has been getting steadily worse.

The authorities yesterday ordered the Tehran bureau of the Arab satellite TV news station Al-Arabiya closed for a week after it broadcast video of the first demonstration following the announcement of Ahmadinejad’s reelection.

Foreign journalists have been prevented from covering the demonstrations, some have been notified that their visas will not be renewed, and some have been the victims of police violence. A member of a TV crew working for the Italian station RAI and a Reuters reporter were beaten by police in the capital. A BBC TV crew was threatened by police at one point, but demonstrators chased the police away. The correspondents of the German TV stations ARD and ZDF were forbidden to leave their hotel on June 13. Reuters reports that its journalists are banned from leaving their office or taking pictures.

Two Dutch TV journalists working for Nederland 2 were arrested and expelled. Reporter Yolanda Alvarez of the Spanish television station TVE was deported together with her crew today.

This is terrible... It's a frightening thing to see countries slowly succeed at keeping the rest of the world in the dark ;from seeing the crimes that occur on a daily basis against it's citizens and visitors. Something definately needs to be done NOW. But what?

Amazed at how fast the tweets are coming, something like 100-300 every 2 minutes, and of course, I'm refreshing every other minute. US Govt has asked Twitter to delay site maintenance today to allow Iranians to continue updating the world on what's going on in Tehran.
