United Airlines to Bump Obese Passengers [MERGED]

This is stupid and sad.

United Airlines bumping bigger passengers?

Quote:
United Airlines may bump severely overweight passengers from sold-out flights.

Passengers who are too large to fit comfortably in a coach seat will be required to buy a second ticket or upgrade to business class, where seats are larger, if United's flight attendants can't find two open seats for them.

The Chicago-based carrier said it decided to adopt the tougher policy after receiving more than 700 complaints last year from passengers "who did not have a comfortable flight because the person next to them infringed on their seat," spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said.
700 complaints? Out of millions of passengers? That's bullshit.

United Airlines to Bump Obese Passengers or Make Them Pay More

United Airlines announced that it will now start bumping obese passengers from sold-out flights. They will be asked to buy two adjacent tickets or upgrade to business class on the next flight. If the passenger decides not to upgrade or adjacent seating is not available, the ticket will be refunded without charge.

I wonder how many people this will affect, especially if more airlines adopt this policy. A recent article in Forbes found slightly more than 1 bump per 10,000 passengers last year, for a total of more than 60,000 people bumped last year.

I'm not the complaining type, so I (and I suspect millions of others) would not be reflected in such a statistic, but having sat next to people on airplanes whose love handles have been flopped over the arm rest into my lap, I have a hard time seeing this as a bad thing, as insensitive as that may seem.

They give tall passengers extra leg room, I don't see the problem with giving fat passengers more seat room and tiny people less seat room. It should balance out. 700 complaints out of millions who fly?

Or they could make normal sized seats instead of packing everyone in so fucking tight in an effort to get as many seats in as possible.

Yeah, this strikes me as a temporary solution at best. At some point they're going to have to start building airplanes to more comfortably accommodate the extra girth of today's average passenger.

Tall passengers can request special seating in the front row or in the aisles where the doors are located. Those rows have more leg room.

I assume that extra wide individuals can request aisle seats when flights aren't full as well. That might make them more comfortable, but it won't do anything for the person next to them, especially if they happen to be stuck in the middle seat between two extra large passengers.

I guess my question would be, if there are so many people complaining about having to "share" their seat with someones love handles .... why wont AA put maybe 2 XL chairs on each plane?
Does this not make sence?
Yes they may miss out on a few dollars, but they can keep everyone happy... I dont get it.

Personally I'd love to fly in a plane where I can get the assurance that I won't have to share the seat I paid hundreds of euros for with some other guy's fat rolls.

And yes, I think the low number is mostly because of the low amount of people who bother filing a formal complaint. Too much bureaucracy for that.

But I do agree that airplane seats should be made to fit the average person and a few sizes more. Still, you can't expect every airplane to be built built for morbidly obese people.

It is true that, usually, the first row and the exit rows provide more leg room. It is not because they want to give that extra room but because they need the space to allow passengers to deplane safely in an emergency situation.

I am one of those passengers that always request an emergency row sit... simply because, I don't fit into a regular sit.

Whats funny about this is that those bulkhead seats usually are smaller in width because the arm rests have to include the screens and tray tables and don't raise up.

SO, you can be tall, but you'd better not be large and tall, because they steal an extra inch or so from you.

Also kinda annoying when you've recently had a baby and use those seats (which accommodate bassinets). They gonna kick those women off too?

There's a good chance that reducing the number of people they try to pack onto single flights would encourage more people to fly and actually increase their revenues.

What about people with allergies who have to sit next to someone wearing too much perfume, or a smoker?

I thought it was standard practice already to charge people for two seats if they need them?

Where's the thread about the person who is deathly alergic to peanuts and can't fly on planes that serve them? I think we discussed that here too...
