It was right about the time I accepted I would never be a size 6 and never wanted to be.

In this whole debate I see alot of issues in lack of empathy. If only we could truly walk a mile in the other shoes. Folks wouldn't be so quick to judge or to determine that things can be so easily solved.

The rise in obesity in this country is not a just simple matter of ok stop eating crap and exercise. The weight loss industry is making a killing yet and still we are getting fatter and fatter.

Many companies refuse to hire smokers. In some places smoking is banned in private apartments (Belmont, CA being one), which effectively denies smokers housing. Because of second hand smoke hysteria we are not protected by anti-discrimination laws. If the third hand smoke hysteria catches on we probably won't be allowed within a hundred yards of other people. Maybe they can set up special camps for us.

I ride the metro everyday for work, this is a very real issue for me.

2 ideas -

1: When fat people circle the wagons they provide perfect defense for each other. Very little in life is as certain or as powerful as fat-solidarity and arguing against it, on the INTERNET of all places (I wonder if anyone's done studies on internet usage, related to weight...) is a recipe for losing.

2: I don't like strangers touching me. Whether it's intentional or not is irrelevant - just don't fucking touch me, ok? Really, it's not a bias, it's a requirement - DO NOT TOUCH ME!!!

And just to ward off any "Oh you wouldn't mind if she was a size zero..." that's just stupid. I fuck fat chicks, I fuck skinny chicks. This is not about sexual attraction; it's about not wanting other people's bodies to come into physical contact with mine while we're traveling. It's gross to have random people's sweat on your clothing, or to smell like them after they've gone. I hate it when my own cell phone digs in my leg, I sure as fuck don't want YOURS digging into it as well.

I think that in travel there's a right to be left alone and if your ass is too wide you're probably going to break that rule for someone else. And for me that's what it comes down to - yeah, you have the right to be whatever size you want, but at some point your size is going to start impinging upon other people's rights, and that's not ok. It's pretty fucking rude, actually, so I feel more than justified when I shoot you a dirty look and, after waiting for you to get all comfortable, ask you to get up so I can move away from you.

It's probably cyclical. If every time you go out someone shoots you a dirty look for being fat, then you probably don't want to go out very much. Therefore, you spend all your time online, ordering food in, working from home, buying everything online...and remain fat.

Honestly I don't care where fat comes from and I don't judge people for being obese - I simply require other people to not touch me without asking. That isn't asking too much, and I think it's great that a company is willing to take aggressive action on my behalf. I was really distraught with the Canadian ruling that companies can't charge 2 tickets for people who don't fit into their own seats and I was afraid we'd see a similar ruling here. We still might but, for the moment, I think justice is being served.
