I wonder what is the fair solution? A person can't fit in the seat and the airlines are not going to make the seats bigger.

Nah, I just don't care. I've dealt with shallow self absorbed twats like her all my life. Usually when I'm around them I make it a point to blow smoke in their direction.

Sick.
A Japanese short range 747-400 has 580 seats on it. Talk about squeezing them on board! For a good comparison we need to look at the older model 747-100. The American version had 350 while the Japanese SR model had a bit over 500. One reason for this is the Japanese short range version carries less fuel and thus has a larger payload but the interior is the same size.

About being heavy, my friend an American has no trouble with seats. He is 5'8" 223lbs but fits comfy in the seat and does not need an extension. The airline said something about needing more than an extension, so we are talking about some really large people.

An other difference is Japanese check there luggage. Only foreigners for the most part carry these in the cabin. With all of the carry on luggage the boarding process takes a lot longer in America than Japan. The Americans have it backwards, they should charge for carry on luggage and make the first two bags free.

I was on a flight to Dublin that was used as a connection for Americans. I swear their 'hand' luggage was bigger than my normal checked in luggage. If fact 'hand' luggage it was not because they were wheeling it along! It was so bad that when we landed the weight on the overhead lockers caused the oxygen masks to come down! My one and only flying experience with elderly American tourists!

I have a small bag I bring with me. It carries my small first aid kit, my mp3 player, several empty books (one is for writing the other is for drawing). and I have maps of every state. a compass, and some other stuff. It's slightly smaller than a backpack so it's not huge.

A couple of points.

Weight is not an indication of girth. Muscle weighs more than fat so two people can weigh the same, but one look "normal" while the other looks "fat."

Men typically carry weight differently than women do. A guy is more likely to have a big belly while a woman has a big ass. I say more likely, because their is so much variety, much of it based on the age at which the weight was gained. So individuals of the same BMI (a very bad way to measure fat btw) would fill a different volume.

The problem with this policy is the lack of concrete guidelines and its potential for arbitrary application.

In this thread alone, we've had two people who seem to have spent the last 10 years under rocks... or they'd have seen the huge advances in our understanding of why people get fat... and why the old "fat people are just lazy self-indulgent pigs" is inaccurate more often than not. Imagine the joy of getting one of these individuals as the gate keeper to your boarding your homeward flight.

When I flew to Indonesia, my entire luggage was a small backpack the size your average kid uses as a book bag. I actually got additional attention in Customs because I was flying so light... or maybe it was carved hardwood penis bottle opener I brought home for Flip.

So, if people crowd over into other seats, taking up other people's room (and part of the seat space other people paid for), is this perfectly acceptable? Charging for an extra seat is an immediate solution for the airlines.

As for the other bit....really, there are only so many reasons people become morbidly obese, not everyone is on anti-cancer drugs, you know. Also, what's wrong with weight loss programs?

Cigarette smoke chokes me up something horrible, be it second hand or even on clothes, it does not go over well at all with my lungs. There are also people with serious asma which it is potentially a far worse problem for.

I avoid places that allow smoking and keep my distance from those people that have the scent. My stance on this is firm, I do not want to sit next to somebody who smells like an ash tray on an airplane ride for god knows how long.

I like not being crowded over in my own seat by somebody in the seat next to me. They can be as obese as they want, that is not the issue here, however, so very many of you are making this the issue due to personal reasons and misinterpreting everything.

The issue is that I want my own seat to myself, nothing more. Is that so unreasonable?

Not buying it. Even in the best of times my food budget is $4 per day, and in a pinch I can do better than that, and I eat well. I've been avoiding HFCS for years. I eat none at all, and very little sugar. I eat my veggies and I limit my grains to whole wheat, rye and oats.

When I see what people put in their shopping carts I have no doubt why they are fat.

McDonalds cheaper than veggies? Only if you're buying your veggies at restaurants. And people don't just eat expensive, crappy shit at McDonalds, they don't even get out of their fucking car! At the supermarket they drive around the parking lot looking for a spot that will save them twelve steps.

Last time I went looking for an apartment I told the manager I wanted a place that didn't face the parking lot. He told me there were plenty, because everyone else wants a door right next to their car.

Americans are fucking lazy, and their choices in food are just plain stupid.

I just wanted to say that as far as my "oops hand slipped" thing--I wouldn't actually DO something like that, but I would THINK it and enjoy a little fantasy on flight like that--I'm SO not into purposely invading people's space (unless they gave me permission to of course).

Posting While Intoxicated
I'm tired of people (men) invading my personal leg room on flights when they plunk themselves down and assume the manly-man position with their feet planted well apart so their legs are splayed open while they sit. When I'm sitting next to these guys, it forces ME to have to sit with my legs crossed or firmly stuck together for the duration of the flight while they get to air their crotches on their journey. Perhaps THEY should be bumped too.

Next time it happens I'm just going to shove their legs right back to their side with mine.

How can a people who work more per year than anyone else in the industrialized world be considered "fucking lazy", except out of ignorance? US workers work more, with less vacation, than their counterparts around the world.

There is undoubtedly a connection between the long, often sedentary working hours, little recreational time, and the prevalence of obesity in the US. Add to that the lack of affordable childcare and health care, and you have a lot of people are extremely busy doing the best they can in a system that doesn't value their health, mental or physical.
