The case against anti-sonar technology...

Yer damn nuclear subs - containing hundreds of personnel and armed with nuclear warheads - can't actually see each other.

British and French nuclear submarine collision 'as serious as sinking of Kursk' - Telegraph

I swear there's a BBC situation comedy to be gleaned from this unfortunate little incident.

Dad's Army meets Allo Allo... in submarines... or something.

This is the future of warfare.

No, Lucifer. The future of warfare is a great underwater demolition derby. Every nation spray paints weird slogans on it's subs and we all meet somewhere at sea. The last sub standing...or floating as it were...achieves world dominance for its country.

Hmm... Are demolition derbies a uniquely American experience or do they have these abominations elsewhere?

It's kinda scary that as big as the Atlantic is... they happened to be at the right depth at the right time to have a little prang.

Apparently, British and French nuclear submarines follow the same patrol routes, and are occasionally involved in joint exercises, so maybe this wasn't as much a "chance" encounter as is being suggested by the media.

Neither country is in a state of war or conflict as far as the submarines are concerned.
Which means that the submarines should have been pinging their fronts once in a while.

There's no way to passively hear the motor of either submarine when both are meeting
head-on (which is what happened from what i understand ) so it's not so much stealth
technology to blame, but the lack of active sonar pinging (looking at what's in front of you).

In the times of peace, you don't swim blind in hopes that someone else will make noise.
