Sacred Rights of the International Two Spirit Gathering

Sacred Rights of the International Two Spirit Gathering

Quote:
Beyond the bathroom doors, men and women dance around a drum in more traditional costume—feathers, fox pelts, moccasins, beads, and bells. They’re all here for the 20th annual International Two Spirit Gathering, a celebration of and for those who feel they carry both male and female spirits.
When I was on Hopi, I spent a few days with a gay Hopi man who had the most amazing costume drag/sewing room tucked away in what was once his parents back shed.

He taught me how to prepare, in immense quantities overnight for a family ceremony, hominy over an open fire, all the time calling me "mule" (because as the n00b I had to do the fetching and carrying).

He did face a lot of grief from people outside of his immediate family, and kept his hobbies to himself.

However, the "two spirit" concept was certainly known...in particular I had a few discussions about this with Navajo friends of mine.

Anyhow, enjoy, and this post is for him.

Absolutely are. I'm preparing for our RL wedding in less than *gasp* two weeks...small as it is...I still want the baby, the man, and I to look nice for pics.

We actually WENT on SL today, mostly to get in a heated discussion with our SL neighbor who tends to be a bully because he wants our plot of land...

Life is good. I miss my friends on the rez. I think I need to log off and write some snail mail.

Thanks for asking. I hope you're good too? Feeling OK??!

The best part is this (from the article):

Quote:
A letter from Barack Obama to the Two Spirit Gathering pledges to “bring about a more tolerant America.” Clyde Bellecourt, a 72-year-old elder and one of the founders of the American Indian Movement, speaks to the group about the importance of connecting with their identity. His words carry special weight and move some to tears: “I stand in total solidarity with each and every one of you,” he tells them. “I love you.”

This is an article that gets into a bit more depth on the two spirit concept for those interested: Gay Native Americans Rediscover 'Two-Spirit' Identity

You're welcome! I bet you will look great in pics... and your baby may steal the show just like my one year old nephew stole the show at my wedding when I was 20... but he was soo cute. LOL, he is old enough to get married himself now.. time flies.

I am feeling better. For some psychological reason I was a stress case this morning but now I'm a lot better. I am drinking a little which I don't normally do, I suppose I should have done it on new year's eve lol. But overall I am ok... it's always good to be here and talk.
