I'm fully aware of the extent of insult this means in their culture. I hope when he returns that, somewhere down the road, we throw the book at him.

His bodyguards surprised me. Not one was near enough to dive in front of him. The guy got TWO throws.

It's perfectly reasonable to question, but it's another to be rude or attack someone physically.

Unprofessional. I would not call such a person a journalist or a reporter.

Just another angry man working for a Cairo broadcaster that we waste some of the $2 billion a year called "Democracy Efforts" in Egypt.

"Some Iraqi journalists stood up to apologise."

If they followed with hard and important questions, then wrote or broadcasted articles that are fact checked and researched to support or refute what was said, all the better.

I am sure that the reporter felt it wasn't his professional duty to throw shoes at Bush.

But I am having a hard time not excusing him considering the state of Iraq today.

Why expect that? Our media doesn't even meet that standard. If I could have found a way to fund a professional shoe-thrower at that news conference, I would have hopped on my Paypal account so fast it would make your head spin.

Rude, my ass.

Al-Baghdadiya's bureau chief told the Associated Press that he had no idea what prompted Mr Zaidi to attack President Bush, although reports say he was once kidnapped by a militia and beaten up.
Kidnapping aside, I can think of a ton of reasons he'd want to hurl things at president bush, I'm guessing most would be stopped by a security check though

Iraqi Throws Shoes At Bush During Press Conference (VIDEO)(SLIDESHOW)

Quote:
Shoe-throwing Iraqi journalist Muntadar al-Zaidi, a reporter with Cairo-based network Al Baghdadia Television, had experienced first-hand the brutal violence that consumed Iraq last year, reports the Washington Post:
Zaidi, colleagues said, was kidnapped by Shiite militiamen last year and was later released.
In an eyewitness account of the shoe-throwing incident, Modest Bee reporter Adam Ashton reports that Bush and Maliki had just finished their speeches and were preparing to take questions from the Iraqi media, who "have never had a chance to ask a question to the American president" when "the shoes started flying."

In additon, Ashton reports that Iraqi security guards removed two more Iraqi journalists who had praised Zaidi's shoe-throwing protest as courageous:
As it ended, a couple Iraqi security guards in suits took away two more Iraqi journalists because one of them called Zaidi's protest "courageous." Hammed bravely stood up for the journalists. Talking to a friend just isn't a crime. They were released a few minutes later after some American officials intervened on their behalf.
Some of the security guards started looming over members of the White House press corps who flew in with Bush, at least until a White House communications aide shooed them away...

Zaidi's TV station is pushing for his release. "Any action taken against Muntathar will remind us of the actions and behaviors taken by the reign of the dictator and the violence, the random arrests, the mass graves and confiscations of freedom from the people," the board of Baghdadiyah TV said.
This wasn't the first time that Bush - or at least a depiction of Bush - has been pelted with shoes in Iraq.

Three weeks ago, HuffPost blogger Jamal Dajani noted that crowds of Iraqis "gathered in Ferdous Square, where Saddam Hussein's statue one stood" and pelted an effigy of Bush with their shoes.

Remember that picture of George H.W. Bush in the lobby of the Al-Rashid Hotel which was placed there after the 1991 Gulf War, forcing visitors to walk over Bush's face?

It got replaced with a portrait of Saddam in 2003 by U.S. soldiers who apparently weren't needed elsewhere, like, guarding all those weapons depots after the Iraqi Army got disbanded a few months earlier, putting thousands of trained soldiers on the streets, without income and occupational prospects.

Funny how all these little tidbits of information only make me feel more sympathetic towards the shoe-thrower.

I knew something along the lines of it being unprofessional or disrespectful would pop up, but I kind of wish more things happened that made Bush face the pain he has caused. I don't think that man cared a bit about being professional. It's obvious that was fueled by pure pain and emotion.

I look at this more as a reflection of the worlds opinion on America, not just GWB.

The world is happy that Obama's now in office. And we're eagerly awating to see if he will improve things or not.

Nobody has a grudge with 'America'. Most do, however, directly blame Bush for the past catastrophes.

P.s. America is a continent, not a country.

It's a good job I'm not that journalist.

I wear 14-hole Doc Martens with steel toe caps.

Oh, and I can't write.

Oh, is it literal Monday already?

By the way, much of the world had a bad opinion of America before Bush. It's not like they loved us before 2000.

Yay Monday \o/

And yes, I'm nitpicking. 's just a pet peeve :3 Nothing personal.

And trust me when I say that the opinion about US politics wasn't -near- as bad as it was when Bush started his thing. Ironically (or not so ironically) the previous bad taste came from the first gulf war.

Personally, I feel that Bush has now been justly rewarded, by a proper Arabic insult.

Rude, my ass.

There's a market for professional shoe throwing? I've got a pretty good arm, despite being past my prime a bit. Do you need to do any post graduate training to be a professional shoe-thrower? Are there scholarships available? Union? Licensing requirements?

I really need to look into this. Maybe I can start at the local level, throwing Birkenstocks at county commissioners and the mayors of small towns, then work my way up to chunking nice loafers and tennis shoes at State House members and the directors of administrative agencies. Once I go national and get certified in engineer's boots, the sky's the limit, baby!
