You know - I'll be the last person to defend Bush, but does anyone else notice that when he popped back up after ducking the shoe, there was a bit of a smile on his face? I think he handled it pretty well. Then turning it into comments about how people should be able to do things to draw attention to their causes was a pretty good move.

I'll fault him in a LOT of areas, but honestly, he fielded this one pretty well. It would have been funnier if he had caught the shoe and thrown it back at the guy, but kudos on the quick reflexes at his age.

Talking to a small group of reporters after the incident, Bush said, "I didn't know what the guy said, but I saw his sole."

Classic.

Funny line.

Dahlia - there are two options for skins here at SLU. The black one I assume you're using and a blue one. People using the blue one have a background color the exact same color as the font you're using in this post, which makes it completely invisible unless the reader highlights it.

Just a heads up.

The only disappointment was he wasn't buried under a mass of shoes.

Still, for those right wingers annoyed by this watch the end of the footage. People were slow to respond but it looks like they kicked the crap out of him.

I'm sorry but given how much Bush has screwed over America let alone the world I don't know how anyone could defend him.

I read that as "There are two skin options in SL" . . . and was waiting for some joke. Confused about where you might be going, but waiting for some joke.

Where's the joke? *whimpers*

heh

lol - no joke there. I meant forum skins - the colors you see these forums in. The default is black, but if you go to user cp, there is an option for a blue one. A lot of people, including me, find the blue one easier to read. But sometimes people with the black background use a white font color, and when they do that, it's the same color as the background, so it's invisible.

Whenever I see a blank post from someone, I highlight it, and that brings out the text. All I meant to do in my post was give Dahlia a friendly head's up that her post was invisible to a lot of people in the forum. No joke or anything.

If you want a joke, I can probably come up with one. I hate to disappoint.

Heh, yes I know, that is why I said that I had read it as "two skin choices in SL". I should have added: before I realized it said SLU.

Oh, and I've seen a lot of blank posts when I'm at work. Then I get home and randomly click on a thread and see that the blank post was actually a picture. It is odd because I see some pictures, not see others, while at work.

Sometimes it takes a while for pictures to load on the connection we have here at work, so maybe that's the problem. Does your workplace have filters in place? They might be blocking the downlads as well. Also, SLU seems to have a problem here where, when you open a thread, it will load just fine, then all of a sudden IE freezes for up to 30 seconds for no apparent reason. It's annoying. It doesn't happen on my faster home connection on Firefox.

The IE thing is a rendering issue - one way you can get around it is by cutting down the number of posts show per page. Posts contain a lot of HTML, and IE chokes on it until it can process the whole page.

The Problem with Iraqi's

Ahem. Note the tweed jacket with the arm patches and the stethoscope around my neck. I am supremely (un)qualified to field this question.

The problem with the Iraqi's is not that they are ungrateful. It's that Iraq is one of those countries where they play football/soccer and not a lot of other sports. We Americans grow up with sports that involve our arms. We throw baseballs, pass footballs, and toss basketballs. We can't kick worth a damn, but we have GREAT arms.

If they had a throwing culture in Iraq instead of a kicking culture, it's much more likely that the journalist would have hit Bush. As it is, he threw like a little kid. (I almost said "girl" but I was afraid people wouldn't get the whole "satirical post" thing).

On the other hand, we also have a game called 'dodge ball" in the USA. It's a dangerous game that we encourage grade schoolers to participate in because at that age, we need to thin out the herd a bit. There are two people who survive dodgeball. Those who can throw and those who can duck. All the rest die. We use Red Rover to weed out the short kids by clothes-lining them into massive cranial injuries, but I digress. My guess is that President Bush falls into the "really good at ducking" category. He was pointing and laughing at the reporter as he ducked the shoe. That means that even an Iraqi who had the same generations of selective throwing-arm breeding that we Americans do would have a difficult time hitting the Prez because of his superior dodging skills.

This has been Sports Anthropology Moment with Dr. Trout Recreant.

Edit: I forgot the third category of kid who survives dodgeball: The kid who can deal well with broken bones and severe concussions. These kids turn out kind of goofy later in life due to the repeat brain injuries, but they are pretty good at dangerous jobs because they don't get hurt easily and they heal fast.

I think the majority of folks are more astute at separating out Americans from America's leaders. Maybe because they've been required by geopolitics to keep up on what we're doing and most of us can't find countries like Pakistan or Iraq on a map.

Or maybe because they have first-hand experience with regimes that don't reflect the will of the majority, so they give a country's population the benefit of the doubt.
