Quoting again because you changed it.

There is a difference between understanding and agreement. The way you were responding made me feel like you were disagreeing with something different than what I was trying to say. I don't care if you agree, but if I bother to post something I at least want to know that the point I was trying to make is the one you are disagreeing with.

Beau, I never denied it. I was curious about your personal experiences with this type as I think that it is rare and not at all as calculating as you make it seem. A person that calculating would have to be near sociopathic. I do believe that there are women like this and it's too bad about your brother-in-law.

It's true there are many marriages where a (much younger) woman is married to a (very rich) man and it's obvious who benefits from what, but usually they at least like each other.
Lo I never said it was overly common, I was just pointing out they do exist. Now I think it is more common in some areas of the country than others. I think high, high wealth areas its a bit more common. By no means close to a majority though.

Sorry I jumped on ya. I always got along with you so when it appeared you were jumping on me it made me say....WTF???

Anyway, what women really want are Coach handbags and miniature collectible shoes. At least, that's what I'm told.

OMG! The skinhead ate Sarah Palin and stole her glasses!! Conspiracy!

So far I've learned in this thread that people are different and play different roles in their relationships at different times, and that some people are bad, but most are good. And Beau doesn't actually hate Lo, but she thinks he hates her because he's a misogynist, which wikipedia informs me is nothing like an endocrinologist. Ann wants chocolate. She probably deserves it. I'd give her some, but apparently if I do, I'm not a real man because she's controlling me...or maybe I am and she's not...or maybe sometimes chocolate is just chocolate. At any rate, the whole mess is frustrating, and I'm considering taking a vow of silence and moving to the mountains so I don't have to keep beating my head into the brick wall.

All I really know is that I want to be Atticus Finch when I grow up.

I disagreed because I really do feel like in the long-term situations you discuss there just gets to a point where you can't possibly still be missing the forest for the trees. It just seems more likely that a symbiosis of some sorts must have developed, regardless of how unhealthy it is.

Great God Almighty!

CollectibleShoes.com - Elegant Collectible Miniature Shoes

I'll be damned. There IS such a thing!

LOL! Why...What...How...!!???!11eleventy!11

I'm just speechless. I officially give up. Throwing in the towel. I know all of you women aren't into this, but if enough of you are to make this an actual industry, then I just don't know what to say. They don't even come with a doll to put them on. They're just teeny tiny shoes! Who thought this was a good idea!?

/me sighs and looks lovingly at his collection of die-cast Chevy trucks.

My pubescent daughter - like many of her peers .....

".......My pubescent daughter - like many of her peers - are much enamored of the books and film and I'm planning on discussing the theme with her. Not because I think she doesn't separate fantasy from reality, but because of a general cultural confusion regarding sex roles. By confusion I mean that we believe that women and men are equals and their relationships ought reflect that ideal yet we have a persistent mythology of women wanting to be swept off their feet by a prince charming.

Here is my preconception which I'd love to have holes poked in: women actually do want their mate to be caring, controlling, dominant, and dare I say paternal to some degree despite our intellectual belief that they don't or shouldn't. ......."

Unfortunately, it's not that cut and dried.

These things aren't readily apparent, in many cases, because many times the men or women who go for the wrong type don't end up finding out until they are invested, at least a bit. Compounding the issue is that many men or women who do behave like jerks aren't doing it on purpose and many times don't realize that they are.

If this happens to a person several times, they may end up with a mindset like that Chip described earlier - bitter and jaded, and end up throwing in the towel.

Staying away after the fact? Of course. People who don't have their own issues, as you aptly pointed out when you talked about cyclical behavior.

I don't think it's all so gender specific. Except for the miniature shoes part.

Example: Yes, a lot of women do have the idea that they can "fix" a man. But then, lot of men have the idea they can be a knight in shining armor. It seems to me that these are both expressions of the same desire, to save someone from themselves. And in either case, it rarely works.

You're a good man, and you get mega points for using the phrase "Zoot alors!", which cracked me up.

If collecting itty bitty shoes is her her thing, well, there are certainly worse things to collect. Lord knows I have a worse collection than that. I collect used heroin rigs. (no, I don't. That was totally untrue. I actually collect dental fillings from corpses I dig up under the light of a full moon.)

Still. Tiny shoes. What does she use them for?
