Do you think she wrote the script for that? I am under no such illusion.

Anyway, I guess we should make it unlawful for celebrities to voice an opinion, because they're just stupid. Every single, last one.

One of my personal heroes is an Indian actor and activist named Shabana Azmi. She is "just" an actor - actually just one of the most highly regarded and acclaimed actors in the world - but she also has served in Parliament (in an appointed seat rather than an elected one) and is a very earnest and hardworking activist for a variety of progressive causes.

I know people have a tendency to dismiss political activism from celebrities, and sometimes Shabana Azmi's critics do too. Sure, her opinion is no more right than anyone else's. But she feels she has a responsibility to use her work and her fame to promote social change that she sincerely believes in. "Art should be an instrument for social change" is how she puts it.

And really, isn't it better, in some ways, for celebrities to leverage their fame for causes they believe are just and right, than to leverage it to make millions hawking soap or makeup? We attack celebrities for being sell-outs when they do commercials, and we attack them for being full of themselves when they engage in sincere activism. Wow, society sure is hard on the people it puts on pedestals.

I'm not saying that Hayden Panettiere's cute little commercial (which is cute, and is funny) is the same as Shabana Azmi serving in parliament or hunger-striking for the rights of slum-dwellers displaced by urban development. But Shabana Azmi is 35 years older than Hayden Panettiere and a whole hell of a lot more famous and influential (in some parts of the world). So Shabana's work certainly has more gravitas than Hayden's cute snarky video. But Hayden's heart is in the same place - and I think she should be applauded for using the fact that people know who she is and will stop to listen to what she has to say to make a statement she believes in.

You don't have to listen, and you don't have to agree. But to criticize Hayden for trying to use her fame to support social change is, in my opinion, wrong-headed.

Oh...I *don't* care what her opinion is.

But I'll gladly sit in an empty room and listen to her talk to me all day long...and her f-bombs are soooo cute!

...oh...does that make me a bad person?

I forget who said this, but it expresses my opinion about celebrity opinions: "Why should I listen to someone who makes a living pretending to be other people?"

They're welcome to have opinions but my dander goes up when it feels like we're supposed to pay more attention because Tom Cruise wants to talk about ADHD, or because Tom Seleck wants to talk about gun rights.

Nice people sure, but still just people....

And .. far more importantly ... the video bashes your choice of candidate.

I didn't watch the video. I have no idea who this person is. I have never watched "Heroes".

But to me the person who seems to care the most in a serious way about this person's opinion appears to be...Serenity.

Hi, I'm Hayden Panettiere
and I'm hot enough that I know I have your attention for at least 30 seconds.

There are three things I think all citizens should do:
Smoke cigarettes
Vote for John McCain
and don't wear a seatbelt

A vote for McCain is a vote against change.

He'll keep tax breaks for the rich, start another war, and we'll all probably die.

He's just like George Bush, except older and with a worse temper.

Let's vote for John McCain and stay the course.

Don't switch horses midstream. Get an older horse that would take 12 years to cross that stream cause he's old

John McCain: he's had affairs with lobbyists so you'll get fucked and he'll get fucked.

Everybody wins.

Nobody fucks with John McCain!
