Founding Israel could well have been the biggest mistake "we" made in the 20th century. "We" (because it wasn't just us that did it) had no right to take someone's land and give it to someone else. Much like if Canada (Blame Canada) had annexed Montana and gave it to native american tribes.

That said, what's done is done. Unfounding Israel (if not actually impossible) would be as bad. It certainly wouldn't win us any real friends anywhere. We do, however, need to do all we can to encourage Israel (and Israel's neighbors and ourselves) to become a good neighbors.

Then Israel's big brother took a baseball bat, and beat them up so badly that they ended up in the hospital. So far, no one has charged Israel's brother with a crime.

If, by "we", you mean the US, then "we" didn't have shit to do with it. This was all Britain and France.

However, Montana is a full state in its own right and has been part of the US. The US has not been defeated on its own soil.

The Ottoman Empire started a war. Palestine was not so much of a 'state' of the Ottoman Empire but kind of a territory. It was completely desert. The "palestinians", such as they were, were not a unified people, had no government and really had no state. They did nothing to improve the land and were subsistence farmers -- barely eeking out a living on a patch of land that really no one wanted, except the jews.

At the end of WWI, the Ottoman Empire was reduced and the Middle East was parcelled away. Saudi Arabia, also not a country at that time, was given to the House of Saud for collaborating with the British and helping them to win the war. Should that go back to its former owners too? Because, y'know, there were lots of nomadic tribes before WWI. Why should only the Saudis get the goods? Oh right. Its cause the Saudis were Muslim and no one feared that they would move in and throw the Muslims out. So because no one contested the formation of Saudi Arabia, they have a right to land that was given to them by the same British and French victors as what formed Israel.

What dismays me most is that 12 of you actually voted.

The 2 alternate choices in the 'poll' sort of remind me of a girl I used to work with who used to think up 'fate worse than death' choices when she was very bored....these usually revolved around a quite repulsive man called Ray Green. They started off reasonable and got progressively more extreme as the day went on...generally culminating in......

'If you had to sleep with Ray Green or die by being beaten to death by a mob after having your head decapitated by a sharp spear and trampled to death by an elephant.....which would you choose'?
