for beginners, original poster left the intial post entirely too open ended. highly political topics can't be simplified to a one line poll. the bait is too transparent and people will simply answer the poll or mock the attempt. this is exactly what happened.

the proper bait in this instance is to take a position. as this is a very emotionally charged topic, it will immediately draw out people with opposing views. those people will in turn draw out people with similar views. the original poster could then step back and fan the flames. this is still transparent to most forumites but it will always draw in one sucker and that sucker will draw two.

which group to bait? either is good. but one is better.

going against israel would draw sympathizers and the far right bible thumpers. it wouldn't draw jews because jewish people are used to this kind of bait and stick to meaning full discussions and lobbying and wouldn't waste time trying to educate the sl forum. instead it would be poltically correct people and such. but going against israel places the original poster in position of potentially being labelled racist and anti-semitical. personally i wouldn't be comfortable taking a negative postition for the sake of forum drama.

instead, it is better to let someone else be negative. for this i advocate going for israel as better bait. a lot of antisemitic people use israel as an object to direct their hatred towards jews while arguing that their feelings aren't against jewish people but against national policies. these people will cite the misery of palestinians as evidence. anti israel rhetoric is a vehicle to express antisemitism with a pseudo politically correct veil.

also a lot of left leaning people have started to champion palestine because the religious right champions israel. this is how left defines itself as being opposite to right. a lot of this forum is leftist. thus there is a much wider audience to bait with a pro israel arguement.

additionaly, taking out the poll would force discussion.
