McCain whines "life isn't fair"

Aww, poor McCain says the reason Obama is gaining in the polls is because "life isn't fair":

McCain: Obama lead growing because 'life isn't fair' - CNN.com

Quote:
Sen. John McCain jokingly said Thursday that Sen. Barack Obama's poll numbers are rising as the economy seems to sink "because life isn't fair."

"He certainly did nothing for the first few days," McCain told Fox News on Thursday. "I suspended my campaign, took our ads down, came back to Washington, met with the House folks and got on the phone, and also had face-to-face meetings."

What I saw looked like he was just joking around with the press people. I didn't see it as a whine. Maybe I misread what was reported. I'll go back and check.

Seems that being kept in a cage in Vietnam or Laos or wherever for all those years would be more of a "life isn't fair" story than this for him, but who knows.

That's the sense I got from it - this same story is in other feeds, and I never got the sense that he was "whining" at all.

That's just partisan spin. Except even the partisan Boston Globe isn't spinning it as a whine:

McCain: Life isn't fair - 2008 Presidential Campaign Blog - Political Intelligence - Boston.com

Quote:
Republican John McCain -- making the rounds of the morning news shows as polls show him falling behind Democratic rival Barack Obama and his running mate losing the confidence of voters -- sounded either bitter or fatalistic, or perhaps was trying some gallows humor.

Asked why Obama has been rising as the Wall Street crisis has dominated attention, McCain said with a chuckle on Fox News Channel: "Because life isn’t fair.”
Hey look, August of 2007 and he said the very same thing -- was he "whining" then too?

TheHill.com - McCain: "Life isn't fair"

Quote:
“It’s entertaining, in that I was the greatest critic of the initial four years, three and a half years,” McCain said. “I came back from my first trip to Iraq and said, ‘This is going to fail. We’ve got to change the strategy’ to the one we’re using now. But life isn’t fair.”

Joking or not about "life isn't fair", this part is not meant in humor, and it is IMO as big a pile of self-serving emo - with an additional anti-patriotic jab - as "life isn't fair":
Quote:
"I came back and suspended my campaign and got the House into the negotiations at the table, which they had not been before. We were able to get a large increase in the number of Republicans who voted for it. We were able to make significant changes in the bill, which improved it rather dramatically. And I'm confident it will go through the House of Representatives."

McCain said Obama's approach was to "phone it in" -- in regards to working with congressional leaders.

"That's the difference. I suspended my campaign and put my country first. And even if I had failed, it was still the right thing to do. We didn't fail. It's going to pass."

He was definitely joking. POTUS08 (on XM Radio) played his interview on Fox and Friends this morning and he used the same phrase a second time when asked about Ifill as moderator tonight. I think he is just trying to blow off a question that isn't really in his best interest to answer at this stage.

It isn't just the "life isn't fair" comment - it is what he went on to complain about in serving up his self-perceived heroism on this whole bailout thing and that the stunt of him rushing back to Washington in slow motion and "cancelling his campaign" while his staff was still campaigning didn't work out as planned. Instead, he is perceived as having made the whole thing worse. The man comes across as cranky and whiny constantly at this point.

Meh. Alright. I'm not a fan of the guy either. I just think there's more substantive things to be disgusted with him over than his inability to tell a joke without looking like a douche.

Look at it this way, Cris. 2012 isn't an option for a 72-year old man. This is his last chance and it's slipping away before his eyes.

Is he supposed to be all giggly and yukking it up?

He was obviously joking. Its the kind of thing someone with a somewhat fatalistic view of things would say when faced with seemingly insurmountable circumstances.

No big deal,so far as I am concerned.
