You have little faith in the dropping dollar. The workers at the Nike factory in the US will be paid in dollars, not quid or Euros. Since the dollar will almost certainly drop to a tenth of it's value after this bailout that Nike will be back to 60 quid.

Boy, and hasn't he proved THAT point. The idea of McCain running back to DC to save us all just sends shivers down my spin.

McCain ranked 894 out of 899 in his graduating class at Annapolis. By his own admittance he's not especially savy about economics. "The issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should," McCain said. "I've got Greenspan's book." Or, "I know a lot less about economics than I do about military and foreign policy issues. ..."

So this is the guy who's going to single-handedly save the US, and by extension the global, economy? Oh wait, he has a team of economic advisors. These must be the guys who just 2 weeks ago had McCain telling us our economy was sound.

This is an interesting angle on it. I have to deal with beggars every day and, maybe it's just me, but after about 3 months of it I have zero empathy, patience or kindness for them.

I'm so liberal my blood is pink, but kind of agree with him (not the plz die part). Most beggars aren't even poor, they're just useless and show up at the same spot every day to ask for handouts. There were some quite revealing exposes on PBS at one point, and they followed one panhandler back to his SUV and his suburban home. I also find it hard to believe that the ones who do need real help can't find SOMETHING to do, even if they find a tissue box and a string and a stick and start trying to make music. I've only ever given money to one or two beggars, both of them I actually believed their stories, and neither of them I saw after about a month. Otherwise, my money is always going to the musicians. They give something back.

Then you must have noticed how a huge majority of them were there every day, working "shifts", on regular hours as smooth as clockwork. Never improving themselves or moving on, but just showing up year after year asking for YOUR money, rather than bothering to even look for anything of their own. I don't agree with Merovigan about almost ANYTHING ELSE (lol), but when I think of the "poor" we should be helping, it's not the beggars on the street. It's the single mothers working double shifts at two jobs, barely affording health insurance or having to get their 12 year old kid to get a job to help pay the rent. Those are the struggling people the government should make things easier for.

The beggars I have a problem with are the disruptive ones. In lanes of traffic begging with a child strapped onto them, or squeegying filthy water all over the car window and waiting for change before cleaning the shit off... sitting on a street with a cup is ok by me..

I guess I've had some more aggressive beggars, I've been followed down the street by them more times than I can count, and it's damn creepy. If I didn't have my man by me I might have run or called the cops. Most of the beggars I've encountered will walk to your car at crowded intersections, knock on the windows, shout at you through the glass. Either that, or wait outside busy stores like CVS, hold the door open for you and then put their cup right in front of you so you have to really step around it. I don't mind the ones that just sit anywhere near as much as the pushy ones, but it does garner a hostile response when they just shove a cup in your face, and don't even say a word, just SHAKE it at you.

No thanks, I'll save my quarters and loose change for the guy over there who's playing Sweet Home Alabama on his beat up acoustic guitar
