My mind was made up months ago. He ain't appealling to me any more or less than the other guy.

If the doom and gloom is to be believed, then we are facing what could amount a national failing of the entire economy, as in I go to the bank on Monday and see a sign reading:

"All Bank of America Branches are Closed. The FDIC does still insure your account up to $100k and will be contacting you within 120 days to establish a repayment plan. Thank you."

Then you come back to the SLU PRS forum and you read what was posted last week into this and you see that a virtual FLOAD of people here were saying the same dang thing and we're all dead. We're all hosed. Get your money now.

So McCain says "I think my time is better served being part of the conversation on fixing this before all goes to hell in a hand basket."

I dunno. I see this as a no win for both guys. Obama is opening himself to the possiblity that a solution WILL be found and he'll be accused of being too busy bashing Palin to be bothered being part of that solution. McCain on the other hand is open to the real possible attack of using brinkmanship when he should have been debating.

It's a mess.

That, as usual, the repubs in office want to give the CEOs involved in the bail out their big Golden Parachutes (or: A clause in an executive's employment contract specifying that he/she will receive large benefits in the event that the company is acquired and the executive's employment is terminated. These benefits can take the form of severance pay, a bonus, stock options, or a combination thereof.) when they had to be bailed out of a financial fucking meltdown speaks volumes to me about what they find important in this issue. Those CEOs can suck it up with the regular benefits their employees get.

Yeah this is lame

We shouldn't have to bailout their executive perks ..

Not only of the CEO, but anyone in upper management.

It's a huge gamble: McCain better really show HE is doing something essential during this downtime. Also he needs to pray the economy does a turnaround fast so it appears he swooped in and saved the day.

This will be the first and only time in my life I ever root for the stock market to keep going down.

A little historical perspective on public rioting [and worse] if the elections are suspended and military involvement:

During the last days of the Nixon Administration, the Joint Chiefs of Staff issued orders to top military unit commanders in all branches of the service, both in th eUS and deployed overseas to NOT obey any presidential orders unless confirmed by the Joint chiefs.

The men and women in the US armed services are very patriotic, decent people who support the Constitution. I DOUBT seriously, if they would support a takeover by any President, no matter what the philosophy.

I agree though, NOW is the time for this issue to be debated.

They should get EXACTLY the same severance package that is given to the lowest level "pink slipped" employee and not a damned penny more.

I agree with you there for sure. But, I'm not sure what choice there is. The alternatives to letting them sink aren't pretty either. Huge, fucking mess.

I keep posting this places and nobody ever tells me why it won't work....

If the problem is indeed that credit is locking up and businesses who need short term loans to meet payroll are in danger of losing the ability to get money or credit worthy borrowers are in danger of not being able to get funding then why can't we (taxpayers) fund a new bank that will handle those needs so that Main Street will keep right on rolling with business as usual?

I see no reason why taxpayers should prop up failed businesses of Wall Street when there are other solutions. If we are going to spend money, shuffle a bunch to the FDIC so that every retail depositor can be made whole and set up a new bank that will cover the business payroll loans.

I'm no economics expert.. it was the WORST and most incomprehensible class I took in college...made Victorian Prose seem like hilariously good entertainment, in fact. However, my understanding is that there is so much foreign capital invested in the US that the rolling, snowball defaults would result in the foreigners pulling their money OUT of the US economy. This would make a very bad situation worse.

Sooz, if I understand correctly, most of that money is invested in mortgage backed securities. Basically, they invested in our debt.

I don't see much sanity in giving all your money into the church collection plate while your own children are starving at home.

I understand what you're saying but I am so ignorant on this subject I just don't know WHAT needs to be done; but I do think SOMETHING has to be done, otherwise it just gets worse.

David Letterman tells audience that McCain called him today to tell him he had to rush back to DC to deal with the economy.

Then in the middle of the taping Dave got word that McCain was, in fact just down the street being interviewed by Katie Couric. Dave even cut over to the live video of the interview, and said, "Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?"

Earlier in the show, Dave kept saying, "You don't suspend your campaign. This doesn't smell right. This isn't the way a tested hero behaves." And he joked: "I think someone's putting something in his metamucil."

"He can't run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she?"

"What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!"

Developing...

I wonder part of the "campaign suspension" is to take time to figure out how to distance McCain from the fact that he was chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation from 1997 to 2001 and from 2003 to 2005. According to McCain's own website, the committee oversees issues such as " interstate commerce, tourism, consumer issues, economic development, technology, competitiveness, product safety and insurance". It's not the Finance Committee, but it still puts him in a tough spot, given the recent non-competitive, economic meltdowns, including the bailout of the insurance giant AIG.

Is Obama's campaign mentioning this and coupling it with McCain's statement about not understanding economics as well as he should?
