I had to post this headline for good measure just because it makes me laugh:

Didn't Bush slip through something that he could suspend elections in time of national emergency?

Bush would end up on trial for treason.

Only if you think the people in the military would fire on their fellow citizens. I don't think they would.

Bush would also have to suspend Congress somehow

Since they literally could impeach him in a matter of hours.

After the fact, maybe, but all power is shifted to the executive under those circumstances... supreme court?

Bush has had it, just (barely) going through the motions now. He wants the fuck out of there ... yesterday.

Congress would impeach him, The "Directive 51" would go to the Supreme Court and be stricken down.

The penalty for Treason is Death; its spelled out in the Constitution.

Bush gets executed.

Unless Bush could get the Military to continue to follow him and not the Congress .. that is how it would go down.

There is no provision for suspending elections in the Constitution .. it would require an amendment, not just some law like the Patriot Act.

Heh, this whole turn of the discussion is making me think of Caesar. Only, people liked him. But, you know, we do have steps to the senate building...

"Directive 51" redirects here. Directive 51 can also refer to Hitler's order for the fortification of the Atlantic Wall.

<--- laughing so I don't cry

Oh, and on the point itself:

Quote:
The directive specifies that, following such an emergency, an "Enduring Constitutional Government", comprising "a cooperative effort among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the Federal Government," coordinated by the President of the United States, will take the place of the nation's regular government, presumably without the oversight of Congress.[4] Conservative activist Jerome Corsi and Marjorie Cohn of the National Lawyers Guild have interpreted this as a break from Constitutional law in that the three branches of government are equal, with no single branch coordinating the others.[5][6] The directive specifies that the president has the power to declare a catastrophic emergency and does not specify who has the power to declare the emergency over.
So it is possible that questions regarding impeachment of a president for violating the Constitution may be rendered moot.

ETA: And what might be construed as such an emergency, you may well ask?

Quote:
Such an emergency is construed as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions." [1]

The thing is, that when you cry "WOLF" and say that the bailout must be passed or the world will end tomorrow and here it is 5 days later and the world has not ended, you start looking a little foolish.

Also - huge mistake by McCain to use the language "suspended campaign." Just about everyone associates that phrase with a candidate publicly announcing that they are basically out of the race. He should have found some other way to convey that idea without using words that mean something so drastic.

I just took a gander at the some of the right-leaning sites and they are split 50/50 on whether McCain is totally off the deep end or crazy like a fox.
