According to my reading of this document (feel free to correct me after you read it too) the actual funding request was initially for $10 million. Looks like they only requested $4m from the Feds (the stingy bastards) This was funding for a one time project (NOT their operating budget), an expansion of their facilities, that was priced out at $22m. This request is for FY 2009. I thought I saw a link for a similar request for FY 08. Haven't been able to dig up whether any funding was approved for that FY, and I'm bored, so not going to pursue it any further.

Those tightwads in the Alaska Legislature "slashed" that request to $5m. Palin approved close to $4m. Still an assload more money than they would have had at the start ($0)

I can't quite tell if these were expected or already recieved, but private donations for the project were $7m.

The group claims to receive 90% of it's funding from private donations. $3.9 million would have been 17% if the total of all funding for this project, if my admittedly faulty math is right.

Covenant House's 2006 990 form show's they received approx. $1.2m from -all- government sources that year, and had an operating budget of around $3 million, for which they were fully funded with revenues of $3.2 million from all sources.

Budgeting is a matter of setting priorities, not just handing out money hither and yon. She (apparently) still allowed a sizeable State contribution to this charity. The only way this is considered a "cut" is in the classic Democrat definition of "we didn't get 100% of the money we requested."

Apparently one message board post I saw mentions that $2million more went to a similar program in the same budget. "Anne's House" or something like that. I've lost the post and they didn't provide a link, so I can't verify right now.

Passage House, which the story mentions, would apparently not have gotten any of this money in the first place, as it's not mentioned in any of the docs I read, but maybe they were part of the facilities expansion.

In a marvelous display of "unbiased" journalistic integrity the "journalist" that wrote this for the WaPo mentions no attempt to contact Palin's office for her side of the story.

Overall I declare this story a crank piece, but considering the current feeding frenzy it's just more chum for the sharks.

Palin Scrubbing Turns Up an Undeclared Car Wash

ST. PAUL -- In addition to being a mayor and raising four children, Sarah Palin found time for another venture in her Wasilla years -- she was part-owner of an Anchorage car wash.

Palin and husband Todd each held a 20 percent stake in Anchorage Car Wash LLC, according to state corporation records filed in 2004.

A review of Palin's gubernatorial disclosure filings indicates that she failed to report her stake in the company on the form that requires candidates for governor to disclose any interest in a non-publicly traded company.

The car wash venture was not entirely smooth sailing. State records show the business ran into trouble with Alaska's division of corporations business and professional licensing after Palin became governor of the state in 2006.

A Feb. 11, 2007 letter to the governor's business partner advises that the car wash had "not filed its biennial report and/or paid its biennial fees," which were more than a year overdue.

The warning letter was written on state letterhead, which carried Palin's name at the top, next to the state seal.

On April 3, 2007, the state went further and issued a "certificate of involuntary dissolution" because of the car wash's failure to file its report and pay state licensing fees.

Palin's gubernatorial disclosure filings also reveal her involvement in another failed startup -- a marketing business which was to go by the name Rouge Cou, which evidently is a literal French translation of "red neck." On the 2005 form, Palin describes the firm as one for which she secured a license but did not conduct any business.

Considering that "W" was given the largest surplus in the history of this country by that tax and spend democrat Clinton and ran it down to the largest deficit in the history of this country, Sarah Palin can certainly be considered economically qualified for the presidency by republican standards.

I don't know the story behind this obviously... but when I shuttered my independent business as a courier to go back into wage-slavery, the method my accountant and attorney recommended to let my business "die" was to not file forms or pay the fees for the annual re-registration.

That doesn't mean anything, but it could be that. It would also explain why she didn't report a stake in it, if the business was defunct.

I recently had to call and explain to the IRS (again) that the reason I didn't file an 07 tax return for my business is that it closed in 05.

I was not aware that this was a requirement for any of the positions that Mr. Obama has held. I've done quite well in my particular occupation with absolutely zero experience running a private business.

I think the salient point is if one *has* run a private business, have they done it within laws and regulations, and how successful have they been.
