My initial guess is it will not help so much with voters in the center,

But rather voters on the right.

Especially the base of the Republican Party

The ones they are still trying to convince McCain is an actual Republican.

Finally things other than the stupid pregnancy fiasco are starting to trickle into the press. Sadly televised news is still stuck on it.

With Palin revelations, McCain's gamble is clearer - Los Angeles Times

Scathing accusations for someone being touted as a reformer, eh?

For a publication I distrust as much as the LA Times, that's a pretty good article.

This one especially made me go WHA??

According to this Republican, who would discuss internal campaign strategizing only on condition of anonymity, the McCain team used little more than a Google Internet search as part of a rushed effort to review Palin's potential pitfalls.

I'm sorry but ??

Partner and soulmate? Then who the hell is his wife?

Those are pretty strong words for a woman he supposedly only talked to for 15 minutes or so before adding her to the ticket.

Why the HELL are they bringing up "soulmate"?

They would never do that if she was a man.

Was the McCain campaign snookered by the "draft Palin" efforts that had it's roots in a college student's blog? The Anchorage Daily News seems to think so.

Quote:
The hype can probably be traced to the Web site of a 21-year-old college senior majoring in political science at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. Adam Brickley, a political buff who will graduate in May, started a "Draft Sarah Palin for Vice President" blog last year and has relentlessly promoted the idea ever since.

The "Draft Palin" movement picked up momentum in more mainstream media, including a column last summer by Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard. Others followed, including talk over the past couple weeks from conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.
Once the far right made it clear to McCain that his stubbornly held first choice - Joe Lieberman - would cause a stampede to the exits, McCain had no choice but to placate them.

Quote:
For weeks, advisers close to the campaign said, Mr. McCain had wanted to name as his running mate his good friend Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, the Democrat turned independent. But by the end of last weekend, the outrage from Christian conservatives over the possibility that Mr. McCain would fill out the Republican ticket with Mr. Lieberman, a supporter of abortion rights, had become too intense to be ignored.

With time running out, and after a long meeting with his inner circle in Phoenix, Mr. McCain finally picked up the phone last Sunday and reached Ms. Palin at the Alaska State Fair. Although the campaign’s polling on Mr. McCain’s potential running mates was inconclusive on the selection of Ms. Palin — virtually no one had heard of her, a McCain adviser said — the governor, who opposes abortion, had glowing reviews from influential social conservatives.
So Palin it was, sufficiently vetted or not. And the "maverick" caved to the "agents of intolerance".

Uh-uh.

Broaden your horizons a bit.

Look at Cindy's post, just above. The reason why McCain sitting there, grinning, and calling her a soulmate has a relevancy is that it appears, the more we look, that they hardly vetted this woman at all. His knowledge of her, and certainly time spent with her before announcement of choice, is mind-bogglingly scant.

It isn't just who he picked, but the process of doing so - because he is going to be the next Decider of the United States of America.

Why the hell is McCain calling her a "soulmate" - he is supposedly came up with this on his own?

"Soulmate" has romantic connotations. Its messed up. I don't care how narrow my horizons supposedly are.

I know this is from the Huffington post, but still.

Somebody...please make it stop...

Palin's Church May Have Shaped Controversial Worldview

Quote:
"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," she exhorted the congregants. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

Religion, however, was not strictly a thread in Palin's foreign policy. It was part of her energy proposals as well. Just prior to discussing Iraq, Alaska's governor asked the audience to pray for another matter -- a $30 billion national gas pipeline project that she wanted built in the state. "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.

Soulmate is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.

It might be fundie code too...

But if *I* were Cindy, and *I* heard him say that on national tv. The conversation when he got home would go something like this.

McCain: Honey I'm home. Have you seen my little blue pills?
Me: (sound of toilet flushing) Um...little blue pills? Why do you ask? (Tossing the empty bottle into the trash)
McCain: Hey. Why is my pillow on the couch?

See Io's explanation. It is a pretty common term these days outside of it's use in a romantic or life-partner situation.

Makes me think back to Bush's last trip to Russia, where he said after a meeting with V. Putin: "I looked the man in the eye. I was able to get a sense of his soul." No one jumped to the conclusion that they were engaging in a tete-a-tete.

Too bad he didn't see that thing with Georgia while he was stumbling around inside Putin's head. Or heart.

Thanks - I was going to post it early, but I was hoping someone else would volunteer to be bitch-slapped for posting from Huff. Nonetheless, there she is, in the video, saying those things. Kinda invalidates *where* it gets posted [from].

hehe, but the message isn't for us.

It's for the people who would actually prefer her to McCain. He wants their votes.

He is saying.... me...Sarah....we are the same in our very souls even if you imagined otherwise. I really am conservative. I really do love Jesus. A LOT.

He is also saying they are both reformer mavericks to everyone else. So that is all he needs to know. Which is bullshit of course but he has to have some answer to the fact he only met this woman once.

And. Remember Bush saying he looked into Putin's eyes and saw his soul?

They speak a different language. It's fucked up.

He didnt say Putin was his "soulmate", thats entirely different.

"Soulmate" is what sappy lovey people say about each other.

Think of it more as "twin souls".

McCain and his ilk don't talk sappy shit even to their wives.
